Decaf Green Tea...

  1. 1) Am I losing any nutritional value by drinking the decaf kind?

    2) Do different brands of Green Tea have significant differences in
    nutritional value?

    3) Making tea is way too much trouble so is there any harm in just
    cutting the bag open and dumping the contents in a glass of water and
    drinking it down?

    Caffeine is just plain bad for you. Besides causing insomnia and
    withdrawal headaches, caffeine raises your blood pressure and
    homocysteine levels.

  3. I drink plenty of white tea and there is no problem. Tea is not high
    in caffeine. However, if you want to avoid caffeine, and you want the
    antioxidant protection of green tea, you can get organic red tea, which
    is fairly inexpensive. I got some at mountainroseherbs over the
    internet. It tastes a bit like fruit punch. I also got this cloth
    sock attached to a round wire, so you put the loose tea in the sock and
    let it steep in the hot water, then you just dump out the wet mass in
    the garbage and wash out the sock in the sink. Quick and simple, and
    of course you can use it for green tea, if that's what you really want
    to drink.

    You are apparently alluding to the effect of caffeine, a diuretic, on
    water-soluble vitamins? Caffeine is not a true diuretic. It is also
    classified as a stimulants (see PMID: 10608 "stimulants ... formed
    molecular complexes with thiamine"😉.

    You should try tracking natural health research for 3 years. You will
    pick up on a lot of things. I saw nothing that particularly stood out
    on this topic in Medline.

    Effect of caffeine on oxidation susceptibility of human plasma low density
    lipoproteins.

    The effect of caffeine on oxidation susceptibility of low density
    lipoproteins (LDL) has been studied. LDL oxidation was induced by copper
    ions and an azo initiator. The conjugated dienes formation was followed
    spectrophotometrically and indicated the LDL oxidation status. Changes in
    LDL protein moiety during the lag phase, studied only in the experiments of
    copper induced oxidation, were followed using the intrinsic fluorescence
    spectroscopy. The decay of LDL fluorescence signal during initial stages of
    oxidation was slower in the presence of caffeine. Supported by the
    fluorescence quenching and polarization measurements, these results may
    indicate the protective role of caffeine against LDL oxidation in vitro. The
    results also indicate that the production of conjugated dienes in the
    propagation and decomposition phase of LDL oxidation is lower in the
    presence of caffeine, regardless of the initiation mechanism. These findings
    may have implications for the effect of caffeine on LDL in vivo.

    Human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) DNA integration is an essential
    step of viral replication. We have suggested recently that this stage of
    HIV-1 life-cycle triggers a cellular DNA damage response and requires
    cellular DNA repair proteins for its completion. These include DNA-PK
    (DNA-dependent protein kinase), ATR (ataxia telangiectasia and
    Rad3-related), and, at least in some circumstances, ATM (ataxia
    telangiectasia mutated). Host cell proteins may constitute an attractive
    target for anti-HIV-1 therapeutics, since development of drug resistance
    against compounds targeting these cellular cofactor proteins is unlikely. In
    this study, we show that an inhibitor of ATR and ATM kinases, caffeine, can
    suppress replication of infectious HIV-1 strains, and provide evidence that
    caffeine exerts its inhibitory effect at the integration step of the HIV-1
    life-cycle. We also demonstrate that caffeine-related methylxanthines

  9. If consumed with or after a meal, black and green tea both reduce iron absorption in the gut, perhaps by 60% to 75%.

    Coffee also reduces iron absorption, but to a lesser extent (rates from 25% to 40% have been quoted).

    The prime culprit is not caffeine, but tannic acid (as a polyphenolic - and an associated binding to Fe2).

    Caffeine has a tautomeric form than has a phenolic structure, which may explain its role, but mainly it has a ketone structure in solution.

    Ie, nobody knows for sure whether Caffeine is significant in iron absorption.

    It is implicated in increased calcium excretion.

    During exercise, the addition of caffeine, can actually raise your
    blood pressure to dangerously high levels.

    Although the diuretic and natriuretic effects of the methylxanthines
    caffeine and theophylline are well established, the mechanisms responsible
    for these effects are unclear and may be related to inhibition of
    phosphodiesterases and/or antagonism of adenosine receptors. With regard to
    the latter, pharmacological blockade of A(1) receptors can induce diuresis
    and natriuresis by inhibition of proximal tubular reabsorption. To elucidate
    the role of the A(1) receptor in renal actions of methylxanthines,

    caffeine elicited a diuresis and natriuresis (in absolute terms and related
    to urinary creatinine excretion) in A(1)R+/+ but not in A(1)R-/- mice. In a
    second series, the renal effect of intravenous application of theophylline
    (30 mg/kg) was determined in clearance experiments under anesthesia. This
    study revealed that the blunted diuretic and natriuretic effect of
    theophylline in A(1)R-/- mice was not due to different responses in blood
    pressure or glomerular filtration rate. The data indicate that an intact
    A(1) receptor is necessary for caffeine- and theophylline-induced inhibition
    of renal reabsorption causing diuresis and natriuresis. This is consistent
    with the assumption that A(1) receptor blockade mediates these effects.
