Yes, I'll be monitoring this situation as it develops - reckon this could backfire on the carpark operators. Personally I think it's a thoroughly sh!tty thing to do when many people could have no alternative to parking in the CBD, yet ...

I think I have to agree with the car park operators that it is a revenue
rasing activity and will make little, if any, difference to congestion in
the CBD.

Maybe they could use the additional revenue to subsidise (read 'pay'😉
commuting cyclists to further encourage the activity. Think of the traffic
and health benefits. I wish! 🙂

The carpark operators are not think straight, if they were they would play along and ask for subsidies for bicycle parks that could offset the new tax on long term car parking. Imagine how many would put in bike parking spots in if they could get $100 back for each park.

Would have to set a minimum standard of available resources such as showers per bike park, ie. 1 per 20 parks and preferably lockers, storage space.

Yeah, but it might coax a few people into thinking laterally. People who
commute into the CBD by car really do need a reality check...there are just
too many alternatives.

CAR PARKS CALL OFF PROTEST CLOSURE
A plan to close thousands of city car parks next week in protest against the State Governments new congestion levy has been cancelled.

Thousands of motorists would have been inconvenienced on Monday by the proposed closure of car parks b/n 6.30 and 9.30am. But the move – which was expected to result in congestion across the CBD – was called off after the Government agreed to consult car parking operaters.

A Wilson Parking spokeperson said yesterday that operators would postpone the closure after the government agreed to release guidelines relating to their liability. Operators have to pay a $400 levy for each long-term space from Jan , rising to $800 in 2007 – a cost they will pass on to motorists."
