I had an encounter on the way home. I'd guess he was one of our students -
bit of a "dude" - vaguely "sk8-y" - no lights - clearly found it just
toooooooooo embarassing to be stuck behind an old duffer with a bright
yellow helmet, rear basket and tupperware lights ..... (Rubbermaid and Ikea
actually)

Overtook him twice - I could tell he realised he'd misjudged my motivation
(thing was I had a favourite Jeff Mills Detroit techno mix on the
Sennheisers .... I had to stay out of the race when he took to the pavement
or jumped lights .....

Mind you it never ceases to amaze me each new academic year when a fresh
crop of young women congregate outside to chainsmoke :-(

POLICE in Cambridge have issued 37 fixed penalty notices and 20 court
summonses in the past four days as part of a crackdown on
irresponsible road users.

The action was taken against cyclists riding the wrong way along
one-way roads, not having lights on after dark and riding on
pavements.

The £30 penalty tickets and summonses were issued between Saturday
(November 12) and yesterday (November 15).

Sergeant Simon Cross, from Parkside Police Station, launched the
campaign after receiving numerous complaints about cyclists not
obeying the laws of the road.

Sgt Cross said: "It causes me concern that people are not heeding the
warnings that they are endangering themselves and others.

"We want to get the message through that if you ride irresponsibly you
run the risk of getting a penalty notice or appearing in court."

Sgt Cross said he had also been contacted by members of the public
supporting the police action.

Statistics for Cambridgeshire reveal that 11 per cent of all road
casualties are cyclists and, of these, 48 per cent occur in Cambridge.

I've heard women say they smoked when pregnant so the kid would have
stunted growth ie a smaller head when born.

of a one-way street. In the wrong direction. With a Small occupying the
kiddie seat.

Still, he /was/ wearing a MartleHat which, as we all, know, is brilliantly
effective at warding off the effects of oncoming delivery van drivers who,
mirabile dictu, are unable to see through restaurants or the pillars of
railway viaducts...

Not at all - I always advocate using lights (and reflectives help, too),
and I agree with your assessment that these people were idiots.

But the fact remains that you saw the muppets in time to take any
necessary evasive action.

They may not be so lucky if they ever cross paths with a less careful
driver, but then any number of lights won't protect you from a careless
driver.
