Cycling, soccer, football, baseball are certainly not about sport. They are businesses which organize advertising platforms in exchange for a fee. The athletes are a small part of the financial pie and are quite irrelevant to the discussion.

It's one thing to have a full on sports athlete die. I just can't put in the same bag Knetterman with Salasnson neither Pantani or Jimenez (who were taking coacaine and antidepressing drugs respectively) with say Rusconi.
I don't say that if in the near future [censored] dies (knock wood!!) it will not have to do with the dope he was into. But in the case of Knetterman we have to pay attention in the age factor as well.
You must also think that it's more dangerous to have a heart attack in the ages 35-55 than 55-real old 🙄 , because reaching far in age the humans are having small incidents that generate alternative ways for the blood to circulate thus an attack will not lead to instant death.
American spectator's sports, as football in England surely have a drug problem. In US they just don't check about dope products, they are only hypocritically concerned about marijuana and cocaine. We should notice thta NBA, NFL etc. have not an agreement still with WADA. Also the NBA stars who played in Athens Olympics had the right to pass every test otherwise they wouldn' t participate. In England the antidoping tests until 1 year ago, were a farce.

Here in the states, we have had numerous stories about young athletes dying.
Especially in football and basketball. But a lot of them have had documented heart anomalies. Last year , a rising relief pitcher died in training camp and his death I believe, was due to weight loss drugs he was taking.

Doping in professional cycling has a long and sordid history. Maybe the answer is more riders per team. Each rider can only enter so many miles annually. That way each rider is groomed for specific races. Something has to be done.

Another dead rider is John Sulk. John was last year at the Eurogifts.com team. He died because of an heart attack during a traing camp. John was 23 years old :

The condition is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. To put it simply, muscle and scar tissue build up on the left ventricle until it becomes obstructed. It's a genetic predisposition, and ironically one of the few fatal heart conditions that's a result of an active lifestyle. Sedentary individuals may go their entire lives without knowing they have the condition as their hearts aren't being stressed enough to scar. It's difficult to diagnose, particularly in basketball players. Being of larger than average size to begin with, enlargement of their hearts often goes unnoticed.

In basketballers, it is also fairly common for a different cardiac abnormality than HoCM. They can also have Marfan's Syndrome with associated problems in the aortic valve.
