Congratulations! That's one killer ride - especially with only a 34x29 as your low gear. (Hint: convert over to Shimano, you can get down to 30x34).
Doesn't sound like you ate very much, though - only 8 Gu in 8 hours??
Yeah, I usually take most of my sustenance via liquids - probably should have eaten and drank significantly more. I have never placed this much of a burden on my system and I kinda went by how I felt.
Oh, and the 34x29 was plenty low - I never felt like I needed a lower gear. Probably about 60 rpm at 5 mph (which I rarely dipped to).
