Is there a standard or best way of dealing with dogs? Just
got back from holiday, whilst there I hired a bike and did
a few k, at one point two dogs got very aggressive and I
discovered just how fast I could cycle ... faster than I
ever thought possible, which was luckily for me faster
than the dogs! I then had to take a large detour to make
sure I didnt meet them on the way back!

BTW, I did nothing to aggravate them....didnt shout at
them or do anything other than cycle past the [censored].

I find that 95% of dogs will slink away if you look them
straight in the eye, point to one side and say in your
deepest voice, "BUGGER OFF" (little dogs sometimes roll on
    their backs in terror).

With something like a Rottweiler or Alsatian, either learn
to sprint or defend yourself with a pump. I outran an
Alsatian once, only because I reached a steep downhill bit
before it sank its teeth into my leg. On the flat it would
    have had me.

I had a copy of Richard's Bicycle Book back in about 1980
(makes mental note to buy a new one)....If I remember
rightly, it had a section on how to kill a rabid,
attacking dog with your bicycle. Fascinating stuff

Yes I had that book too. I seem to rember one technique of
last resort if a large dog had your arm being to try and
shove your fist down its throat and choke it to death.
Subsequent editions had the dog defence section removed
due to objections by animal lovers. I'm an animal lover
but any dog that attacks without provocation deserves alll
    it gets. Iain

Just look at them. Dogs hunt in packs, so that the prey
can't keep all of them in sight, and some can move in
    _from behind_.

    Just talk reasonably to them.

My scariest dog moment was on foot. I was on a quiet back
road, passing a front garden containing a small toddler and
a large alsatian. Dog looks suspicious. Toddler calls to it
    - presumably thinks it would be a good idea if we all live
and let live. Dog hears note of mild alarm in toddlers voice
and of course goes into defensive mode. Dog halfheartedly
attacks, but Yours Truly remains calm and diffuses the
situation. If I'd behaved aggressively (or frightened), I'm
sure the dog would have gone into all-out fighting mode to
    protect toddler and property.

ITYM "bicycle pump". Not sure how well a CO2 pump would
    perform,

I seem to remember something about ramming its head between spokes of rear wheel (presuming dog ain't too big, and that you're saying adios to your spokes), then pushing down hard as billy-o on the pedal. Might not work for squirrels (see other posts), and a bit of a struggle, I'd wager. I'll try it out on next doors yappy terrier and let you know :-)

No, the treatment for dogs the size of yappy terriers was
to pick them up by their back legs and smack their head
    off a rock.

And if that fails you have to resort to the stash in the end
    of your bars.

I have my original 1975 edition from which I can quote:

"If a dog attacks: an effective defence is the aerosol
pepper sprays made exactly for this purpose. They have a
range of about ten feet and are light enough to clip to the
handlebars or to your belt. Or a water/ammonia solution can
be sprayed with a squeeze out of a small plastic container
such as is used for detergent or hair shampoo. Even an
ammonia filled water pistol will work. If you have neither
of these and can't or won't climb a tree, get a stick or a
large rock. No? The bicycle pump. Try to ram it down its
throat. In any event don't cower or cover up, because the
dog will only chew you to ribbons. Attack. Any small dog can
simply be hoisted by the hind legs and its brains dashed
out. With a big dog you are fighting for your life. If you
are weaponless try to tangle him up in your bike and then
strangle him. Kicks to the genitals and which break ribs are
effective. If worst comes to worst, ram your entire arm down
his throat. He will choke and die. Better your arm than your
throat. You can avoid this problem by carrying pepper spray
    or an ammonia solution"

At the time I dotted on Richard's Bicycle Book but re-
reading it now it all seems rather quaint.

Hummm, except in the UK where these items, like pepper
spray, are considered to be Class 5 firearms, along with
    machine guns and the like...
