Hi,
I am from Ireland and have just returned to cycling after nearly 20 years.I am making about 55kph in sprints and am wondering if that is really slow and also why are my toes going dead on a ride,
Thanks

Are your shoes fitted properly? I mean are they comfortable, without having your toes bunch or “crunch-up” in the toe box when you stand in them on a normal floor surface (on the cleats)? If yes, try out some different shoes. If no, do you find yourself mashing the pedals with a lot of downward force? If yes, practice one-legged drills to learn how to pedal “rounder”, that will help. What type of pedal system do you use? Some people complain that some pedal systems with small contact points cause numbness or hot spots… Also if you shoe fit is fine you can also try some orthopedic-shoe inserts they can help position your foot better within the shoe, and help to even your pedal pressure out of a wider surface of your foot (a perfect product I’ve used for years now: Bill Peterson's Powersoles)

55kph is roughly 34mph... thats a pretty decent sprint. It probably won't win many races above Cat5 (beginner). There are many techniques you can use to increase sprint speeds... search these forums for lots of good advice.
I also have returned to cycling after a long absence, and my toes (on the left, only) go dead as well... with well fitting shoes, I might add!
