Right hand/rear Ultegra 8 speed lever finally gave up the ghost. Before I spend any money on this bike is there any way to use old 'left-over' 8 speed ergo levers with my existing set up?
Could I, maybe get by on the cheap, by only buying a Campy rear derailuer or is the cluster spacing different enough that the rear wheel would need to be replaced if I went this way?
I think I have seen this thread before, but I don't remember the answers....it's been too long. And google is NOT being my friend today.

Have you tried flush and lube on them? Spray the mechanism with wd-40 to flush them out. They use a light lube. That will sometimes bring the levers back. ----------- Alex

Yep, did that. Didn't help. Helped when I did it last year....maybe year before. Didn't help this time, but thanks for thinking of it.

Why not just get a 9 or 10s Campagnolo ERGO, any Campagnolo rear der, a shimano 9s cogset and chain-go ride-no more 'dead STI' syndrome.
You can probably get a set of ERGOs for the price of 1 STI lever-new.

I want to spend as little as possible on fixing this bike. I HAVE a set of 8 speed ergos in the 'left over' box and one of my questions is that if I buy a Campagnolo rear der will I be able to use the rest of my gear w/o a problem (wheels, brakes, cranks, etc).
Ok, I know the cranks and the brakes are OK, but what about the wheel? Is the spacing on 8 speed shimano close enough to the spacing on 8 speed Campag that the shifters (that I have) and the der (that I'd buy) will work with my existing wheel/cogs?

Ergo 10s pull the precise amount of cable to shift a Shimano 8s rear derailer[*] on an 8s cog.
So Mr bigtallbike would only have to buy Ergo 10s.
Of course, if his leftover Ergos are post-1997 models, replacing the cam with a 10s would suffice.

Yes, just get some Campagnolo black 8s cogset spacers into your shimano cogset. if you can't find them, send me your address and I'll send ya a handfull.
