virginia has great riding.
west virginia isn't too far either.
or you can hop the metro and go to PA, NJ, NY, etc...

DC is great for non-mountain riding-- miles & miles of paved/gravel trails.
It is my favorite place to ride. We park in Bethesda take the Capital
Crescent trail into Georgetown cross the bridge into VA and ride 20+ miles
out and back on the WO&D trail and then cut down to the Mount Vernon
trail.... It's allot of fun and is one of many options to ride in DC.

The DC metro allows bikes on the trains during non rush hour times.

For mountain options near DC there are many. In MD, two of my favorites are:
Patapsco state park Avalon area which is about 30 minutes from the capital
beltway. It is a fun technical area to ride. Gambrills state park near
Frederick MD, about 45 minutes from the beltway, is also good-- very rocky.

I am trying to NOT have a vehicle while I am there.
Don't need the expense or hassle if I can do what I need to w/ the
bike.

I'm thinking the winter months would be good justification for a (SS)
Surly Pugsley (disc) and a New Yrok Noose and (Second Generation ;-)
Evo Disc Lock.

(But for not much longer)Yes go when you want to. Go your own way. Start out and return on your own. Never having to wait. And you don't have to pay a fee. I could hop on the bus gus but its to much of a fus. Haven't been on a city bus since Foxy Lady was a hit on AM radio. But I do dream riding it one day just to say I did.
