Dawes Horizon- Bottle Cage Problem

I had this problem, but the cages I used were not specifically
Dawes ones. They were designed so as to let you adjust where along the
body of the cage they mounted to the bike, so by shifting the downtube
cage as far forward as possible, it missed the bottom of the seat tube
cage...

They are a bit close together but I've got 2 Elite cages on mine and
they're about 5mm apart. I've had others on there without problem. Yours
cold be different of course, mine's a metal 2003 model.

Is this a small frame size? I've seen small frames where not all bottle
cage mounts could actually be used. It's sloppy design and manufacture,
I know.

My mountain bike has one cage under the down tube and one cage on top of
it; my solution is to use two identical bottles, drink from the top one,
and when it is empty swap the clean-ish cap from old top bottle onto the
still-full old bottom bottle, obviously putting that bottle in the top
cage and the old top bottle with the old bottom cap in the bottom cage.

Sorry, that description isn't very clear...

How about Tacx Tao cages? The unusual shape allows the cages to be fitted
closer together than most, and the bottle is placed reasonably high up.
Distance from lower bolt centre to bottom of bottle is 16mm.

I've seen somewhere (C+ review I think) a bottle cage that swivels
slightly to aid insertion or extraction. Would that help, or do the
bottles clash when in position?

I use a Dawes Horizon, purchased last October(ish). I have bottle
cages in both "within frame" positions. They are very close but not
actually quite in conflict. I use the cheapest cages available at my
local bike shop. I think one of them was Raleigh-branded; I cannot
remember about the other.

If you can't find a bottle/cage combo to solve the problem (obviously
the preferred solution)...

Move the seat tube mounted cage further up the frame just enough to
clear the other cage. Secure it there with a pair of jubilee clips (aka
hose clips).

Alternatively, you could move it up enough so that the bottom fastening
of the cage is bolted into the top bottle boss, and use a single clip
to secure the top of the cage onto the seat tube.

In either case, put some suitable tape around the frame where the
clip(s) will sit, just to protect the paintwork.

Sinfully ugly, and an utter botch job, but effective. I've done just
that with two clips to mount a second bottle onto an old frame which
has only one set of bottle bosses. Some models of bottle cage come
with a "slots" running through them, at right angles to the long axis
of the bottle, passing over where the normal bolts would be, for
exactly this purpose.

Just another thought - If you happen to be using 500ml bottles (haven't
seen one in a long time), you could change to 750ml bottles and just
use two of them to get the same capacity as 3x50ml.

Zéfal Gizmo is slightly less ugly (& heavy).

Or get hold of some of the wonderfully named Zefal Gizmos to put the
bottle cage where you want. Bronthorne, Cyclexperience, Fisher
Outdoor, and no doubt others, do them. To figure out which size you
want you have to go to the Zefal site where they have a size chart

Get bottles with a cover to prevent spray from getting to the nozzle.
