  1. Been riding for about 3 weeks now...really enjoying myself...I went to a 50k and 100k local club ride this morning and signed up for the 50k route...started out pretty good and started getting a cramp in my calf around the 13 mile mark...got blown out of the back of my group when that happened...good thing there was a rest station at the 15 mile mark...so I go over and lay out on the grass after proping my bike up and one of the club members comes and asks if everything is ok...told him I was cramping and he went a got someone to help me out...they massaged the area and push/pulled for a few minutes and i was good as new...got back on the bike and finished the ride...seeing as how my longest ride to date was 14.991 miles...I was damn proud of what I did today...

    Total time was 2 hours 7min. 10sec
    Average speed was 16.0 mph
    Distance 33.897 miles

  2. Congrats😄 You'll only get better too!

  3. Good job. I seem to get cramps if I am not hydrated enough or from a potassium deficiency. Make sure that you are drinking enough and try to eat a banana before or during your ride. If you don't like bananas, try filling one of your water bottles with Gatorade. It only gets better from here!:p

  4. - salted coca-cola.

    - good to avoid cramps.

    .

  5. Never heard of that one before. I'll have to try it.

  6. Congratulations on your accomplishment.

I agree with hydrating more just before you ride as well as early and often during your ride, and don't wait until you're thirsty before you start sipping.

I drank a full glass of water before my ride and had emptied both of my water bottles in the 13 miles...I can't drink anything other than water or beer (mainly water) due to kidney stones...but I drink about a gallon a day so I don't think I was dehydrated in the beginning...I got some of the "GU" power to make up so I might try that in one bottle and water in the other...might have depleted something else...the banana is a good idea...and what really saved the day was the tootsie rolls!!!

  8. oh, also, bananas are good to eat during your ride, they help w/ cramps

Bananas are damn near performance enhancing drugs. They work miracles.

  10. Anything high in potassium will prevent cramps, banannas(I have no clue how to spell that word) are about the best thing going. Get a camelback so that you don't run out of water because it does not matter how much potassium you have if there is not water you stop working. Congrats on getting back on and finishing.

  11. Congrats,,Im in the same boat,,,want to join a local club and try a 50K,,,but not sure i can keep up,,,my farthest ride so far is about 15miles,,,,someday! Again congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😄

Just do it...you will find a group that will suit your riding pace...and if they blow you out the back don't worry...another group will be along shortly...just be sure to get out IN THE FRONT when the herd gets moving...this way you can choose which group to ride with based on how you feel vs. getting stuck with a group thats gonna hurt you...just find your groove and go with it...

Edited to add...look for group doing a fund raiser with SAG support and rest stops along the way for your first one...you will need it...and they usually draw quite a few riders so there will be a bunch of groups to choose from...they usually cost $15/$20...

Best advice I can give seeing as thats what I did and my longest ride before this one was 14.991 miles...you can do it...I am going on a 30 mile trek this weekend with a riding club...and possibly one Sunday depending on how I feel...

  13. congratulations! ! ! ! !

    be,
    jim
