Czech food Prague eateries

Two years ago a friend and I had a wonderful long weekend in
Prague. I have very fond memories of one place, it will
sound depressing but it really wasn't:-

U modré kachnièky Michalská 16, Staré Mìsto, Prague 1.

The decor was black with purple drapes, the waiters wore
black and there was a Leonard Cohen CD playing. My friend
had wild boar and I had wild duck followed by crepes, it
was great.

It's been 11 years since I've been in Prague--can't remember
any names of places. There was a McDonald's on Wenceslas
Square. . . . Important words: Prosim (PROH-seem) - please,
d'akujem (dYAH-koo-yem) - thank you pivo (PEE-voh) - beer

If you don't have luck finding an English speaker, try some
German you might know. Lots of folks know German rather
than English.

You might ask at soc.culture.czecho-slovak. Be prepared,
though; those folks get nasty about the dumbest stuff.

My friend runs this website and has an excellent Czech
pronunciator there. It includes a lot of the things you'll
need to know. BTW, he is the one pronouncing the words. Hope
this helps.

I haven't been in 5 years so I can't recommend good places
to eat. You're a lucky guy. It's a great city to visit, you
will be there in the middle of spring which should be
glorious. If you have never seen gothic or baroque
architecture you will be shocked.

Prague is also called "Praha" by the czechs. Hello is "ahoj"
(sounds like ahoy) or "nazdar" Bye is "ahoj" or "cau" (chow)
How are you is "jak se mas" I'm fine is "mam se dobre" You
can find many sources on the net that have basic phrases,
some even with sound files so you can hear them.

The czech language is crazy. Some people think the czechs
are rude, xenophobic. I won't condemn an entire country, but
it's different than say Amsterdam. It wasn't that long ago
they were living in a closed, communistic society so maybe
that has something to do with it.

As for food, one word: Knedliky (dumplings). And of course
the beer is world reknowned - if you like Pilsners.
