13/11/03 - The number of people caught using banned drugs in sports continues to rise. During the first nine months of the year 123 sports men and women were caught out by tests.
Over 7 PC of tests proved positive against only 3 PC last year. Illicit drugs use is greatest among cyclists. Over 13 PC of cyclists tested were found to be positive. The testing authorities link the higher number of sports men and women caught out to increases in the number of tests and targeted checks.
Fewer tests are leaking out beforehand says Flemish sports minister Marino Keulen. There are also major problems among Belgian jockeys. Both events at Ostend and Waregem (West-Flanders) were checked. Several jockeys tested positive. Others refused the test. They now face disciplinary measures.
Volleyball and canoeing are among the cleanest Flemish sports as far as drugs use is concerned. The Flemish sports minister intends to post those sport men that proved positive on a web site as soon as new legislation is passed.
yesterday I used my Ventolin rather intensively during my competition chess game, and I brought down an opponent rated 300 points higher than me. TBC .....

Imagine if they had a couple MLB teams...

Ok, I could use some enlightenment here. Why does a Jockey dope? To lose weight?

I've been reading Tim Moore's French Revolutions. It's a bit of a shock, considering what he knew of Tom Simpson's demise, what kind of stupidity he engaged in (effectly as a cyclo-tourist) on Mt. Ventoux. The book got some good reviews, it's mostly amusing, somewhat informative, but I find the book more than a bit strange.

You're not considered a master of doping until you coach one of your dad's pigeons to a chess match victory. Until then you are just a rank amateur.
Just get Henry going about how smart his bird is and soon he will clue you in on the secrets. Henry's bird kicks ass at chess. And its not fat either.

I thought I was the only one asking this question! What are they doping with, anit-growth hormone?

Maybe they started with drinking coffee at 5 years of age and got busted with a Thermos full of espresson while in the saddle.

This is not necessarily a joke. There has been an effort on the part of FIDE (International Chess Federation) to instore IOC drug testing. The idea is to try to qualify chess as an Olympic sport.
There is also the fact that the governing body for tournament chess in the USA is the UCSF.

Just think if you took EPO you could take on Kasparov and Fritz at the same time and win (while simultaneously doing intervals on an indoor trainer).

Speaking of pigeons, didn't Adri VanDer Pol once test positive for steriods and his excuse was that he had eaten a pigeon (the Dutch do eat them!) given to him by his friend. VanDer Pol had said that it was a racing pigeon which must have been given steroids and that is how they were in his system.
This is probably up there with VDB's EPO for his anemic dog story - which must now be the fastest on the block.
It's kind of funny the relationship some top pros have with vets - Landuyt and Dr Mabuse. The moral is never visit a horse doctor - unless your a horse, jockey or top pro cyclist.
