If you've got good spatial awareness, miss them by about an inch,
blaring your horn as you pass. That shoud put the [censored] up them
(and if you're lucky they might fall off) and I'm sure they'll get the
message.

Spotted one just at the last moment last night - cycling with no
lights, against the flow of traffic (ie in the gutter on MY side)
wearing dark clothes and a hoodie, and not light-skinned either. It's
only a matter of time....

Of course you should be able to stop or avoid anything within the
visibility afforded you. If this means driving or cycling at a slower

Nothing. I can't recall seeing a cyclist with lights in foggy
daylight; how far away do the tiny glows reach?

you must be puzzled by a lot of things in life then.
Cyclists without lights are not "invisible" they are much harder to
see and therefore more likely to be hit by a car. Luckily I've been
able to avoid them all so far, it would be nice if they would play
their part in road safety.
(I cant believe I need to say this).

Why do you think the HC says use lights? Dont you think it might be so
that drivers can see them more easily and that might be sensible?

I'm amazed how many people are overlooking the obvious point here. Yes
the OP did see the bike but just down the road maybe some half asleep
old dear belting along who's not going to see the bike and rear end it
at 60MPH.
Yes even with lights that may still happen but it makes sense to do
whatever is practical to improve your chances and putting your lights
on will not make you more likely to be hit and may save your life.
