Cyclist hurt in hit-run

Seems to me that there are so many hit & runs happenning lately and not just
to cyclists but to pedestrians walking accross appropriate places like
crossings etc, so why is this happenning?

I reckon that mostly it's because these people are as guilty as hell for the
reason they are driving the vehicle in the first place .....are they drunk
or have they just smoked a joint or worse, are they a suspended driver that
had their licences cancelled? Perhaps more than likely the car is stolen.

Now these all seem to be the usual generalised reasons for why someone would
let another person dying in the gutter, but whether it's generalised or not
it is happenning.
I get so [censored] that these people in our society are let off so lightly
by the law even when they re-offend so many times yet they are still roaming
around.

What scares me the most about these people that have access to motor cars
when they're not supposed to, is if they do hit you while you're riding home
on your bike etc, if it's stolen or unregistered how will you be ever able
to get any compensation for the cost of damages to yourself and/or your mode
of transport ( and lets face it, a bike is just as valid as a car for
transport and a loss would be significant), the insurance companies wouldn't
want to know about it and if it was a stolen car, it would be a bit unfair
for the real owners of the car to cough up the money for the misery their
car has caused even if they weren't driving it.So, what does one do if they
were hit by a car that didn't stop?a car that probably shouldn't have even
been on the road in that instance anyway. What kind of people are we
breeding in Australia that leaves another bleeding to death by the
roadside......? It's got me worried!!

I guess the person knew they were in big trouble, it just shows a total lack of caring and compassion though, I mean that person could be dying and to just drive off, there is no excuse you can make

at least its not a repeat of the canberra cyclist who ended up dieing last week.

You would be amazed how many motorists are driving about either unlicenced or with their licence syuspended.
It doesn't happen much with cars, but police usually pull over heaps of motorcycles just for a licence check (happens heaps with me on a m'cycle) as many ride with a 'car only' (not endorsed for a motorcycle) licence. Strike rate is pretty high.

If you're the sorta person who drives about unlicenced, you're not gonna pullover after running a cyclists or pedetrian down are you if your car is still going OK & you can slip away....

And if you remove the unlicenced riders from the motorcycle crash and
riding drunk stats, the numbers change dramatically.

Until car use is a privilege not a right because it's a necessity,
nothing's going to change...

Also, I wonder what the severity of the law is if you're convicted of drink
driving (or culpable driving) versus not stopping after an accident. It may
be worthwhile for the drunk to drive off, wait till he's sober, then
surrender himself to the police with "gee, I didn't see him" excuse.

From my limited experience, not very.

Last year I was witness for the prosecution which put away a drink
driver who'd crashed in to another car. The car he was driving was
unlicensed and he was disqualified to boot. He got fined about $5,000
and put on probation.

To cap it off it took over a year to get to court.
