I have a pair of Hebden Cord training trousers which I use for commuting and
touring. I accept they are a bit pricey (£70?) but mine look quite good
after 7 years.
They are like normal trousers complete with five pockets except that they
are slightly tighter fitting than normal and have a a zip in the calf. A
tiny bit of lycra in smooth thick cloth to give it a bit of stretch. Double
thickness seat with no seams.

They are warm and comfortable in the winter and not too bad on all but the
hottest days.

And what service!
I ordered mine with too long a leg length as I foolishly gave them my normal
trouser length (down onto the shoe). When I returned them, they removed the
zips, redid the legs and posted them back to me free of charge.

This year the outer part of the double seat wore through and I returned them
for repair. Hebden Cord fitted a new seat and returned them to me, again
free of charge.

I will definitely be getting my next pair of cycling longs from Hebden and
possibly my next shorts as well.

My partner wears the much-recommended Ron Hill Bikesters. She wears them
because she would feel conspicuous in tights. They work all right, and
she likes them, and is planning to get a new pair soon, but she's
clearly less comfortable in them than I am in tights, particularly in
wet weather.

I'd recommend you think carefully about your objection to tights. I
resisted them myself for many years, and I now think that was very
foolish.

Might even work for those missing seconds.... Thinking of the dimple
patterns on golf balls which make them go faster through the air. The
fishnets might achieve the same patterning and thus a minor improvement in
aerodynamics....

I bought a pair of trousers from Hebden Cord when I first got back into
cycling some 15 years ago, and I would second most of the comments -
where I might have a different opinion is that they were somewhat
'bulky' compared to modern workaday trousers. I fully accept that this
may be based on outdated material - I seem to recall there are different
options nowadays. They were certainly excellent value for (quite a lot
of) money!

They do not seem to have a web site.

Reading the other replies would indicate that I'm out of step with the
consensus. My cycling strides are a pair of Endura (something) 3/4
lengths. For me they are the perfect all round cycling leg wear. They've
yet to see their first winter but as I'm on the South Coast, I can't see
myself getting too chilly.
