Google for it ( take it you mean Rhine?) there are companies that do
'cycling for softies' type holidays on it so you'd be able to get the
details via them.

My knowledge is partial and 10 to 15 years old. However, there is a wealth
of information through http://www.adfc.de/ (the German CTC) -- though most
is in German.

You could start by filling in this form http://www.adfc.de/119_1 (PLZ =
postcode, Ort = town). This catalogue is a summary of routes in Germany.
They will probably redirect you to the UK source of the English language
version.

You might also look at http://www.germany-tourism.de/biking/index.html (in
English) and chase through the route guides.

Through the Rhine Gorge (between Mainz and Koblenz) there is a road (and
railway line) each side of the river. I do not remember much of a bike
route -- but there has been a massive increase in cycling in Germany since I
was there so it could now be different.

Broadly, one side is a fast and scary road -- the other is a medium speed
road -- quite cycleable.

There is a cycle route the entire length of the Rhine. Not sure if the CTC
has a route book you can buy... possibly Amazon.

I've cycled along the Rhine in the area of Cologne. Paths vary in quality
from excellent to adequate. Still better than the vast majority of UK
farcilities though.

The above reasonably describes the geography of that area. Two points
though. 1) Its a tourist trap, as such accomodation is easy. 2) If you
get off the road into the hills either side its very pleasant!

<thinks> Usually the Germans provide cycle paths along railway lines. I
dont know the the Rhine railway has one though.

Some of it's a bit grim round the Cologne area, but there's nice bits too.

First the good news: there is a signposted route along the entire
length (seems there's one along most German rivers)
There's a guidebook too, 3 seperate volumes in fact, regretfully only

The quality of the route varies from good to slightly worse than
Sustrans. Bear in mind that German cycle lanes are compulsory, and
you're not allowed to ride on quite a few major roads
(Bundesstrassen), even if there is no cycle lane alongside, so
improvising your own route may well lead to extensive detours.

There's major railroads and roads on both banks, so it can get a bit
loud (esp. if you've pitched your tent 10 yards from the rails; I kept
dreaming about trains, and as I live almost on top of a busy
embankment, I should be used to thing going clickety-clack in the
night).

I'm going that way myself again in September, so if you should happen
to have a GPS I could send you my route (but only as far as Koblenz).
