I don't know. But - Modern shoes don't *need* shoeplates. You can
still use platform pedals with or without toe-clips/straps if you
like.

They have synthetic soles, which your old ones may not have; leather soles

There is a company that still does leather cycling shoes - advertises in
the CTC magazine. If I remember the name or find a copy of the mag I'll
post it here

Only in one size though. The ones I was thinking of were Reynolds Shoes
but I can't find an address or website for them. Sure somebody here
will have an address or you could try e-mailing the Mildenhall Cycle
Rally organisers ([email hidden]) as they had a stand there.

Thanks to all that replied and gave me the clues to search the net.

The shoes I think that will suit me fine are Carnac Carlit 200. They are
made of leather, lace up and have a 'walking sole' - just the thing I need.
Think I will get them in the new year as there may be some price reductions
about - best price I could find on the net was £62.85 (size 45 = 9).

Not on my planet. 9=43 (UK) or 41/42 (US)

This is certainly true (can you say "Specialized"?) of some but Carnac seems
to be a name frequently mentioned when people enquire about wider shoes.
FWIW I've got two pairs and they are wide enough for my non-Shimano,
non-Specialized compatible plates.

They are, however, bloody freezing at the moment. Bah!

I chose to buy a size 11 Shimano shoe rather than the size 10 I
usually take. I was able to fit into the size 10s but they were a
little tight in the ball area <ahem>.

The shoes are of the trainer type as I wanted something that would be
comfortable for off-bike use and the larger size fitted the bill
nicely. The also have the advantage of being able to act as flippers
in the case of a flood ... possibly.
