Australia is a big place (roughly same size as lower 48 US states), so there is a big variety
depending on how long you want to go, time of year, climate and what type of trip you want to ride.

I have done two cycle tours in Australia. In 1999, I rode in Tasmania

If you are looking for a one or two week trip in the northern hemisphere winter, then three
places I'd recommend considering are Tasmania, SW parts of Western Australia or the Great Ocean
Road in Victoria.

If you are looking for a longer and more adventuresome trip, then I'd recommend looking at longer
stretches of the outback, e.g. across from Townsville to Broome or Port Augusta to Darwin or across
the Nullarbor. Generally you'll want to consider a northern hemisphere summer.

If you have some more parameters of what you are looking for, then can probably get some better
suggestions.

Howdy Bill,

Spent 10 weeks in Victoria (in 1999)...Get ready for some fantastic rides!...My wife and I did
more than 5000kM without a single flat.

I would have to say it would take a lot of bravura to do the "Great Ocean Road" fully loaded (or
otherwise.)

The main thing to determine is what time of the year you come: in summer you will find that most of
the mainland is hot (temperatures above 100F or even 110F are not uncommon) while north of the
Tropic of Capricorn is very wet (tropical).

Our spring & autumn (your fall & spring) are probably the best times to tour here. You can choose
everything from epic cross-country rides through to winery tours, alpine rides, trips around
Tasmania or Kangaroo Island or some of the scenic coast-line around southern WA, Victoria or NSW.

If you don't want to organise your own ride, there are a number of commercial and bike advocacy
groups that organise rides. The one I am most familiar with is Bicycle Victoria, who organise a
number of great multi-day bike rides, including the Great Victorian Bike Ride (usually held in
December), the Great Tasmanian Bike Ride (and next year, the Great New Zealand Bike Ride).
