Hey, I don't have any problem with people who want to use cyclingforums
as an interface to usenet. But hell will freeze over before I give up a
using dedicated software actually designed to read usenet. Cyclingforums
is like using a comfort bicycle to race a crit. 🙂

All my other froup denizens are complaining about USENET dying[1].
Seems soon there'll only be news.individual.net, a few universities,
and nothing else.

Why would I give up an easy to use simple system for a dodgy difficult

You can use a black and white TV and put green transparent plastic over
the screen to give it the green screen look. After I've bought the 64k
byte memory upgrade for my ZX80 I'm going to get rid of the bubble
keypad and get a real one. Pong is a cool game!

I once assembled some sort of computer for a friend from a kit from
Electronics Austalia, I can't remember the name of it but it had a
hexadecimal keypad and you had to put the program in in machine code.
And another friend had a real computer with a full keyboard but you had
to assemble it from a kit. He doubled the speed from 1 MHz to 2 Mhz
which required changing nearly all the capacitors on the board. He also
designed and built his own circuit to give it colour. He lived at home
in a REALLY messy bedroom and he was doing some computer work on the
floor (because his table was covered in junk) and his mother walked in
and got the soldering iron stuck between her foot and her thong. My
friend cracked up laughing as his mother hopped around the room trying
to dislodge the soldering iron.

We used to lots of fun things as kids, mostly things that went bang and
would probably get you locked up under todays anti-terrorist laws.

We should run a thread on our childhood activitys.

When I first got one of my old monitors, it had some switches on the
back to pick which color scheme. I think it must have only worked in
EGA/CGA/whatever mode, because when put in vga mode (all I had (I was
poor 🙂), it'd just do ordinary VGA colour. I felt ripped 🙂

I solved that, when it came to taking the monitor on field trips, by
making an adaptor, cutting the green and blue wires, and substituting
a switch and resisitors instead -- with the flick of the switch, the
adaptor would go from passthrough, to having a resonably high
attenuation of the green/blue signals. So much less fragile than
everyone else's solution of a wad of red cellophane over the monitor
screen.
