Crackdown on cyclists

Rogue cyclists who intimidate pedestrians and motorists are the
target of a tough police blitz.

On-the-spot £30 fines are being handed out to two-wheeled
law-breakers who have been accused of terrorising people by riding
"hell for leather" down one-way streets or on pavements.

The growing menace is being blamed on a new breed of aggressive
cyclist who flouts the law and pays little regard to other road users,
least of all pedestrians.

In just five hours on Tuesday, a squad of police fined 25 cyclists
for breaching the rules of the road during the latest blitz in St
James's Street, Brighton.

Good.
Recently, having observed cyclists riding widdershins on one-ways, and
ignoring all traffic signs and signals, I suddenly realised that if all
that malarky was legally allowed, then I wouldn't come on all over with the
righteous indignation every time I saw a fellow cyclist (because, of course,
I am the only one that obeys the law).
So... why not exempt us from obeying traffic lights, allow us to ride across
peds crossings, unlit (peds don't have to be lit), treat us as if we did not
have the bike with us. This would give us far more rights, and far fewer
responsibilities, and would fit in with the actual current practice.
Why not?

I think Derby Council will knock down a listed building, put a few bike
sheds in it's place, and leave it at that. The Derby Cycling Group will
demonstrate their complete ineffectiveness and lack of cohesion or business
sense, and end up taking no part in any discussions.

....yes, I live in Derby too. I agree with you - I really hope the money will
make a difference. But I doubt it.

My Dad was nicked for riding on a footpath in the 1950s
I guess he was ahead of his time, but "riding furiously" has been occurring
since at least 1847
