And having taken delivery of a smart digital camera a couple of days
ago, I think I'll finally get a Round Tuit to fill in the Missing
Pictures in the site's support material to back up the leaflet :-)

good price locally.. very small and prob ideal for your aquatic

This is the Olympus Mju 725SW which is 7 Mpix, water proof to 5m and
shockproof for dropping from 1.5 m and amazingly small and light. And he'd
better be happy with it and not look at other camera's or Santa will
demand the non-birthday half back this coming Xmas!

The only issues I have heard about with the Olympus is 1) the image
post processing isn't brilliant (compared to the pentax or canon/nikon
compacts), and that the lens cover can get jammed with sand if you are
not too careful. Otherwise it is the mutts nutts.

We are. It's an optional extra for membership, and since Roos reads the
lingo we get it (I just look at the pictures!).

Olympus and Nikon are the best option IMO - their approach is to give
the most accurate rendition whereas many of the others go for the most
visually impressive results.

I've not used an olympus but prefer the Canon compacts over the Nikon
ones because they give me more control - ie I can control almost
everything on it. Macro with the Nikon (admittedly several years ago)
was a pain.

Must investigate the Olympus one - another friend has one too.

All my photos are taken on an Olympus mju 400. I've had the camera 4
or 5 years, no problems.

It seems to do everything I need and a lot more besides, but I'm not
really a photographer.

I'll have to have a look at one soon - or the pentax optio (very
small.. looks nice but there have been some questions about it's
reliability wrt waterproofness.)

IIRC the olympus can be dropped as well (what did for my Nikon).
I do have an olympus but it is a point and shoot film camera.

I'm sure some of the current problems with my canon A60 are due to it
getting damp in the pocket of my cycle jersey. (to drag this back
vaguely on-topic).

According to the blurb it's shockproof to 1.5m using Olympus' own tests.
I'm not too bothered to find out exactly what those were since (unlike
the waterproofing) I have no intention of /deliberately/ putting it to
the test!

I'm presently trying to resurrect my Pam PDA after being caught in
Wednesday's thunderstorms :-((
It's looking pretty dead so a replacement is likely to be sought.
