  1. I assume this thread is about cycle trailers. I haven't read it but it
prompts a memory from just last weekend.

As I was preparing to leave the Slickrock Trail about 2 PM last Sunday,
a big family rolled up in a minivan (I remember it like that at least),
and start unloading their gear. About six involved, mom, dad, kids about
13 and younger. We have at least one tandem (dad & older child), and
mom's riding a mtb with a trailer, toddler in tow.

They set out to attempt to ride the trail. It was quite the attraction
    for those embarking or departing.

By the time I pulled out, this posse had actually managed to reach the
top of the trail visible from the parking lot. An impressive feat on its
own! But I refuse to believe they went too much farther.

A tandem assault on the Slickrock I can believe. I'd love to watch a
pair of extremely talented riders negotiate that thing on their tandem
with a minimum of foot touchdowns. But the trailer - kid or not? It is
to laugh. I do hope no one got hurt.

The bottom line is this isn't really the group to ask because you are
not going to be able to build it out of PVC and bicycle wheels. It will
have to be a DOT inspected and licensed trailer, so you might as well
buy a used one and fit a bike rack to it.
    --

You clearly dont get the point here A: ALL!! existing trailer that I can
find are massivly to big for what I want
B:all existing trailers I can find are Way to expensive brand new and as for
second hand ones they would be an extreme rareity
C: Home made trailers are not subject to any test apart from any spot checks
that the police might make or checks made by the DOT when they receive a
report of unsafe driving or constuction.
D: I was posting in this group in the hope that a cyclist had done this
before I have put posts in motorcycle newsgroups as well.
E: Almost every trailer I have seen so far have been a trailer made
specifically for luggage as in a fully enclosed thing much like the boot of
    a car.

and just to prove you wrong all of the facts I have seen so far are that I
can build it out of PVC and bicycle wheels as long as it fit the Size,
weight and lighting requirements and as long as you accept the fact that it
wont be able to hold any great weight.

If you know where I can get a SMALL used one at a reasonable price £100 ish
.........( you can get a large brand new car trailer for this) then I would
happily consider buying one and adapting it for my purposes.

You are kidding, right? Maybe that flies in the UK but not here. There is
such a thing as "street legal" which includes lighting, type of axels, what
it weighs and so on. How do I know? We own a custom built trailer that we
pull with our vehicle. It has a lot of things on it that are required by
law, and we had to have a full inspecition on it to get it licesned.

Well I know for a fact that for this type of trailer you dont need any kind
of inspection is yours a particulally large trailer or something like that
.... you can buy build it yourself trailers from lots of places that dont
need any inspection you just buy them build them and away you go. But we are
moving away from the point IF i do need to get It tested I will, Im not
actually going to build it out of cycle wheels and PVC piping.

My actual plan is to get a Very small cheap car trailer and Modify it to fit
in with Motorcycle trailer regulation Sizes and weights thus keep the axles
and lighting and coupling devices etc in acordance with the road veichles
(constuction and use) regulations 1986. I thought it was very odd that you
dont need a inspection either I just presumed that If an illegal trailer was
being used the police would notice HA HA HA HA. (like they notice anything)

I doubt that unless you live in a very backward area. In Canada and the
US you need a plate on a trailer, to get a plate you need an inspection.
The UK, if anything, has more stringent DOT rules.

Hence the need to "modify" it.

Why should I pay for the bits that Im going to rip off ?? and if Im going to
modify the chassis I may as well MAKE a new one whole.

Your local DOT office will have the real facts, there is no way in hell
you can get a trailer using bicycle wheels licensed and insured to run
    on the motorway.

That's about $200 Canadian, a street legal set of trailer wheels, wire
harness, tail lights and a hitch is going to cost at least that much
    unfortunately.

  6. to be fair It wont cost the The cheapest I can find is around £500 and thats
a second hand one which Im not even sure I can tow with my bike (due to
weight they havnt told me how much it is but it sounds heavy)and its bigger
than I want and to build one Roughly speaking we are looking at

steel £50 max depending on Size I decide on

Welding wire and gas This is price for a Full cylinder of gas and a full
roll of wire I will not use it all £20

Suspension / axle £34 this is over spec but i cant be bothered to look for
    any others

    Two wheels £70

Coupling or hitch whatever you want to call it. £12

    Lighting board £16

Socket and wires for M/C end £15

Copy of the road veichles (constuction and use) regulations 1986 £16

This comes to a total of do be do do ......... £233

This is without shopping around at all and some of the parts are over spec
For that price I can build a trailer and have a spare wheel, a couple of
ratchet straps and a Coupling lock for cheaper than a second hand trailer
which isnt really what Im after.

Roughly speaking to include labour this gives me about 41 hours to built the
thing Nearly two days Solid and thats at quite a generous wage
