cycle storage in oban

station and report it found. They'll then hang on to it for you and let
you claim it three months later.

Alternatively have a friend hand it in for you. Then when you get back,
report it missing and it will just so happen that someone has handed it
in a few days previously..

Stayed in Oban for a few days recently on a cycling holiday - I didn't
spot any cycle-lockers in the station but there are some very public
(exposed?) cycle racks just outside the station near the waterfront
(this page seems to confirm that there aren't any cycle lockers -
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/OBN.html). There's a cycle shop
nearby on Combie Street- you could phone them on 01631 562069 and ask
them if they know of any suitable storage.

I can recommend a trip to the hollow mountain at Ben Cruachan - a
beautiful cycle and you can visit the extraordinary hydro-electric
machine within when you get there!

Also - if you need to prepare a picnic for a day's cycle, you couldn't
go far wrong by visiting the Kitchen Garden
(http://www.kitchengardenoban.co.uk/ - it's on the sea front near the
station) - it's a posh deli with cracking food - turns into a
restaurant at night too.

If you contact the police office in Oban asking for advice, you might find
they'll offer to take it in for you.

Lismore? What a coincidence... I used to go there all the time during
the summer when I lived in scotland. Simplest solution might be to take
the bike over with you - the chances of it being stolen anywhere on the
island are sub zero. The Oban boat charges a couple of quid for a bike,
but the point ferry (foot only) which leaves from Port Appin just up the
coast does not, and is much cheaper.

I was last there on my E2E trip last year, when we went on by the Oban
boat, and off by the point ferry...

i am taking my bike over to lismore, the problem is that I am going up
to oban the day before and staying on afterwards but with relatives who
can't fit it in their car and it's too far for me to cycle, so i was
going to leave it in oban.

You could ask at the youth hostel - they have a bike store tat they
might let you use if you ask really nicely...

alternatively, you could take it in for a minor repair along the lines
of "can you fix my bell" and come back 2 days later :-p The bike shops
that I know of in Oban are both near the big Tescos. One is just
off the supermarket car park, and seems good. The other is a Raleigh
branded one, and seems far too clean and surgical to me, but is on the
road behind the other one (can't remember its name...)

The cycle shop just off the supermarket car park (Oban Cycles? Oban
Cyclery?) is really excellent, they helped me out when I split my rear
rim on a tour two years ago. The Raleigh dealer didn't seem to want any
customers cluttering up his nice clean shop, seemed very anxious for me
to find another bike shop and stop wasting his time with bicycles that
needed repair.

Thanks everyone for your help: I have just got it sorted, the youth
hostel are letting me use their bike shed for a couple of pounds. The
bike shop was not very helpful I think because they were really busy
when I phoned.

We had a very similar experience in 1999. My wife's rear rim split on
the way to Oban. I didn't know if Oban had any decent bikes shops, so my
first thought was "at least we can get a train to Glasgow to get a new
wheel in the worst case".

We found the Raleigh dealer first, who said that he would love to help
but didn't have any rims in stock. He pointed us to Oban Cycles who said
that would rebuild the wheel within 24 hours.

In the end it was nice to have a 24 hour break off the bike in a
decent-sized town. I'm just pleased that the rim broke on the way to
Oban rather than somewhere more remote.
