Cycle routes online?

Slightly tongue in cheek, the road planner for London ( search tfl)
which is otherwise excellent gives interesting cycling solutions
incorporating off-road paths which may need a fully equipped mountain
bike and presumes you will average 16mph regardless of
terrain/traffic/gradient.

The new excellent London Cycle guide maps - free - show many off-road
routes; the corresponding signage on the ground is often mis-leading
where it is present at all, and occasionally a barrier taxes this
explorer.

I've yet to see anything convincing for off roads routes, theres a few
sites where people have put their own routes up but nothing more.

I do know the OS is planning something to cover bike&walking routes, so
maybe in the future.

About 10 years ago I stayed in the New Inn at Appletreewick and had a
really good w/e's riding. Always meant to go back, until I heard the
sad news that Jon had a serious accident and nearly lost/did lose the
pub? This site suggests business as usual - is the site out of date,
or are we in happier times?

but it's usually pretty incomplete.

People are adding cycle route info to openstreetmap.org (damned if I can
figure out how yet) but it's even less complete for most areas (probably
because it's too hard for newbies to figure out how to participate).

Some TICs have free maps for some routes, but that varies from place to place
and I don't know about Yorkshire.

If you want a cycle route in London then
http://www.cyclemaps.com/index.html
is the planner you want. The TfL one is [censored] - takes ages to set it up
for cycle only and then gives you wierd routes (e.g. try Paddington to
Kings Cross and it detours you round the back of Euston Station for no
reason whatsoever)

I use bikeradar.com more than ever now, user-uploaded routes both on
and offroad done by GPS and overlaid over google maps. Seems to suit
me well.

http://www.gravitystorm.co.uk/osm/ is the OpenStreetMap cycle-focused
map. Like you say, nowhere near complete, but advancing pretty
rapidly.

Point taken about the learning curve - the tools are ok (though I
would say that) but the help docs are a shambles right now and clearly
need fixing. That said, we're getting new contributors all the time so
it's possible if you perservere.

www.bikely.com has routes from all over the world, including, of
course, the UK, and you can add your own as well

Are we talking the Hudson Way Market Weighton to Beverley, hardly need
a map it's straight all the way

After leaving Market Weighton towards Beverley and passing beneath a
road bridge the cycle path passes St Helen's Well, one of Yorkshire's
sacred wells. The well is in a wooded grotto, between Hudson's Way
and the road passing through Spring Dale.
About 2 miles from the town is the Kiplingcotes Chalk Pit nature
reserve, administered by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and much
favoured by local bird watchers.
Before reaching Beverley the route passes close to the villages of
Goodmanham, Etton, South Dalton and Cherry Burton, all of which are
picturesque Wolds villages and well worth a visit.

Where are you based, I have a few favourite routes based on Beverley

Beverley to Market Weighton by road, rtn along Hudson Way
Beverley to Hornsea by road, Pennine Way to Hull, pick up Sustran
Route 66 to Beverley

I have plotted a 26 mile route using memory map. Starting from
Molescroft near Beverley

Parking at a car park on the Hudson Way
It follows a main A road (cycle track alongside) for around 6 miles,
to Leconfield
Across country for 2 miles
It then uses B and C roads passing through or near

Lockington
Holme on the Wolds
South Dalton
Dalton Hall
Kiplingcoates
Goodmanham
Market Weighton

You then join the Hudson Way at Market Weighton and follow it to where
you started

Memory map shows

Total Distance 26.2 miles
Highest point 350ft above sea level
Total ascending 1052 ft
