Not so. A punt or canoe pole works reasonably effectively as a paddle. For a start witness the way that punts are often steered using the pole as a rudder, which wouldn't be possible if they had no effective resistance to the water. I've paddled an open canoe using a long canoe pole like a very slim kayak paddle when I was out of the depth of the pole.

I think this is in reference to a reverse Polish oarsman rather than the pole used on punts. But you raise a good point, I have checked the unabridged I'm a Massive Punt by Smith et al but can find no references to being out of ones depth with a short pole in it. I guess we're up [censored] creek.

My last trip in a punt was a few years ago, but I was quite pleased with my progress about the environs of sunny Oxford and proved rather better at the game than several inexperienced friends. Then one of the locals took over, and we went further, faster with less effort and less need for all that extra steering nonsense. But if you *do* need that, the pole works just fine!
