I use ordinary lithium grease (from your local garage or auto-parts
shop) for bearings. For aluminium to steel threaded joints, though, I
now use copper grease because it is alleged to help prevent joints
seizing. Copper grease is very expensive when you get it in little
tubes from the bike shop, but much cheaper when you get it in kilogram
tubs from industrial suppliers.

Comma Multipurpose lithium grease seems good value from Wilkinsons @ £2.19
for a 500g tub, and that's a big tub (in the motoring section). Only
thing that concerns me is that it's a bit thin so might dry out in
bearings sooner than later (?)

I use new-type* Finish Line Premium grease in bearings that I don't plan
to redo for ages.

* translucent stuff, not the old white stuff

ISTM that cycle grease is regular grease in expensive packaging. After
all, the conditions (temperature, speed of rotation, load) that grease
on a bike experiences compared to what grease in other machinery has to
live with are pretty tame.

I reckon any old mechanical grease will do, although I have to admit
my toolbox has a tube of "Finish Line Premium Grease", so I was suckered
by the packaging at the bike shop too.

I bought some high quality bearings from a well known wheelbuilder and asked
what grease they used and they said Pedros which I bought and found to be
excellent.

Synlube? That's what I use. I was taught the Lithium was fine if you
were committed enough to strip and regrease every few months as the
grease seems to turn into a form of glue when left.

I have used Vaseline as ersatz hub grease and I've always got away with
it. It's not really grease, however, and grown ups generally say you
shouldn't use it.

I like the Park stuff because it's quite cheap and comes in a big
toothpaste tube, which is less messy to use.

got finesse multi grease 4 99 ..coloured red seems a bit thin but maybe
that isthe the way it shoud be

That's why they do a Castrol CL waterproof grease.
