Cycle champ held at knifepoint

WORLD cycling champion Katie Mactier was bailed up at knifepoint at a
Sydney hotel. Mactier was unscathed but feared for her life when three
balaclava-clad men burst into the Rydges Hotel in Bankstown.

Victorian coach John Beasley and Mactier were there on Friday to meet
Cycling Australia manager Kevin Tabotta. Mactier flew out of Australia
on Sunday to take up a contract with a small American professional
trade team and was not available for comment yesterday.

Beasley said he had his back to the three men when they burst into the
hotel foyer about 3.30pm. "They were carrying knives and corralled
about 15 to 20 people, marched us to a small area at the back and told
everyone to look at the floor while they continued to rob everyone,"
Beasley said.

He said Mactier had left her handbag, with wallet, money and credit
cards, at the table where the meeting was taking place. "Katie was
really lucky because she had her handbag on the floor at the table and
when they marched us off, they sort of missed it," he said.

"She had a lot of cash and all her credit cards with her and it would
have been impossible to get them changed before she flew out on
Sunday." The robbery lasted about 10 minutes.

"If they had guns it would have been a different scenario, but with
knives . . . it was frightening, but at least you've got half a chance
to defend yourself," Beasley said. "She (Mactier) was pretty scared at
the time, but we all had a laugh about it afterwards. She wasn't too
traumatised, I don't think."

I was up at the hotel for the meeting the following morning and the story
was pretty funny. Apparently at first some people thought it was a joke, as
they were all in balaklavas etc. But apparently they grabbed a delivery man
who tried to run out and dragged him along the floor a bit and that's when
people decided it was easier to hand over the phone and cash rather than
have some druggie nutters hurt anyone.. They were 'youths' on foot, and
apparently the short fat one had a bit of trouble jumping the fence... And
some of then had bread cutting knives - I can imagine it now "Hold still so
I can saw into your neck properly" *grin*

I was watching some stand-up comedy on TV last week and one comedian commented that you can make any statement sound sleazy by putting the word "ladeez" on the end. Try it. I think it works.
