Cutting carbon bars - question

  1. I have rebuilt an old mtb hardtail into a city bike, with 1.5" slicks
    and a rigid fork. I mainly use this bike to attach my five year old's
    "half-wheeler" trail-a-bike. My bike currently has really wide profile
    carbon MTB bars that I would like to cut down for road riding. I
    realized that there are aluminum inserts in both ends (semingly to
    reinforce the ends of the bars?). If I cut down the bars, I would saw
    off the ends that have these aluminum supports. How important are these
    internal reinforcements? I do have bar ends and like to use them for
    climbing (pulling 80lbs of kid plus trail-a-bike I need all the
    help...) Will the tension from the bar end clamps and/or the tension on
    the ends of the bars cause trouble if I axe the reinforced ends? Not
    wanting to risk a failure I have not messed with anything yet, but it
    seems like a carbon bar should be plenty strong.

    Any ideas or input? I'm tempted to just pick up a used 40" alu mtb bar
    and be done with it.

    They are for barend support. W/o barends, just cut them.

    the reinforcements are there for a reason! in addition, there are
    typically internal reinforcements where the brake levers are mounted, so
    again, cutting the bars means the brakes are now mounted on an
    unreinforced area. don't cut, just buy another bar.

  4. get a new cheapie set of flat bars, and hacksaw those.

    a shorter bar instead of cutting the carbon.

    why don't you ask them jasper? get an old spoke and feel inside the
    tube for the upper & lower limits of the reinforcement. then check that
    against the average clamp position for the typical brake fitting. maybe
    the manufacturer just made a lucky guess?

    measure typical barend clamp. Measure typical grip width. Measure typical
    brake lever clamp. Add in a fudge factor or say 2" or so and reinforce that
    area to allow the brake clamp. Not that hard to figure out.
