I swap forks around quite a bit and have had no troubles re-using races from
headsets where the bearings were in good shape.. The only ones I've not
re-used are low-end ones that came with unsealed bearing headsets where
everthing was pretty much trashed. I seen no need for a puller either - the
hammer and screwdriver works fine as long as I take care to alternate the
sides I'm striking from.

Try the finger test.
If you can feel roughness or a worn groove, discard it.

A new race is < $8. I'd just leave it there. Now you wouldn't pay $7
shipping for an $8 part so there's an excuse to buy more toys.

The race is one to consider, not just the bearings.
Srcrew driver and mallet allways works for me.

It's installed on a fork that I'm selling. I didn't want to burden the
buyer with having to deal with removing it in case the use a diff headset.

Then I'll have some $$ to buy more toys :-)

Oh yeah. I've popped 'em off with a hammer and driver and reused 'em just
fine.

The puller is the tool to have though. Especially for thick crowns on DH
forks. My lbs does mine for free.

Spend a couple of bucks on a brass drift punch, and quit using the
screwdriver. The headset race will thank you.
