Without knowing Labbe or his deal between USPS work and USPS cycling, I
always figured there was some similar arrangement to the Olympic Job
Opportunity Program. Under OJOP, an employer agrees to allow an employee
that is certified as having Olympic potential to have time off needed for
training. The really supportive employers also gave the employee full time
pay even when they were training during the work schedule. When Anheiser
Busch was big into the program, many of the athlete/employees had more or
less token jobs (plus a case of beer every payday, too). I thought Labbe
probably had a deal along those lines. I'm sure he isn't the only postal
employee that races bikes, but I think he was the only one who pushed the
right buttons to hook up a great deal. The relationship was about USPS/USPS,
not about USPS/Tailwind.

IIRC, the announcement also said he was still intending to race locally in
and around Chicago.

Give me a break. Kenny was just a local racer, one of the faces in the chicago
race scene. He was a good rider, nothing more. He's not really ever been a
"pro". He's a Cat 1 with a good hookup that got through hard work and
asking the right people to help a brother out.

Funny story: he forgot his jersey one year at 4bridges of Elgin and had
to race in a windbreaker vest, 105 degrees, high humidity midday Chicago
sun weather. I thought I was going to die from the conditions.
