Was this event very hilly? It's interesting to see no rear disk.

I've been waiting for a LONG time for someone to give me even half a
good reason to wear socks over their shoes. The closest thing to a
good reason so far is that it'll protect your shoes in the event of a
    crash.

When you look at those tube socks that chimp was wearing, you KNOW they
had to ADD drag, not serve as some sort of aero shoe cover.

Perhaps he's an aspiring drag queen.

It disguises the fact that you're not wearing your sponsor's shoes.

Perhaps, but... TIAA-CREF doesn't have a shoe sponsor. Even if they
did, those socks were some kind of butt-ugly! Creed should be fined by
team management just for being such a doofus!

Turns out they do have a sock sponsor.

So the butt-ugly socks Creed is wearing over his shoes in that photo are
disguising the fact that he's not wearing the sponsor's socks!

    Dumbasses,

The ugly socks are to disguise the fact that YMC isn't wearing shoes.
He's had a metal frame for his cleats surgically implanted in his feet.
You can see little projections of the support structure sticking out
under the sock. He's wearing the oversocks to keep from getting
busted by the UCI and WADA for a performance enhancing modification.
It's time you biddies found something else to agonize about and
stopped doubting the motivation of the Force that is CREED.

What about the boundary layer that the texture of the socks helps generate? If
dimpled rims helps, corrugated socks might help too.

There was a book on time trialing published in the late 1970s by Bike World
of Mountain View, CA written by David Saunders (I think). In it he made the
point that low speed aerodynamics favor a slightly roughed surface (like the
golf ball) going through the air. Sauders advocated hairy legs for
increased speed. Perhaps YMC is trying equalize that due to having shaved
    legs.

If an object is in the transition region from laminar to turbulent
flow, then a roughened surface can reduce it's drag. Otherwise forget
it. Hairy legs? That's just silly...

Tell David. I agree about hairy legs--very silly.

  13. It's really quite simple you see. He bought Nashbar brand shoesand did not
want us Freds to see the logo. Also, it also becomes a new fashion
statement. Go watch your local Thursday night Industrial Park World
Championships. The [censored] will all be imitating YMC.

He was "sponsored" (or the team was) by D2 Footwear, but those are
obviously not those shoes... because the D2 have no buckles. Not sure
why, without a sponsor, he would ride Shimano shoes instead of some
full custom (and very, very nice) D2 shoes, but perhaps that's involved:
