  1. A heads up to all of you who are planning on making cheesecake
this month. The world's largest cream cheese plant had a boiler
explosion this Monday November 28. Luckily, no one was injured. They
make a product called Philidelphia Cream Cheese. The plant manager has
laid off 2/3 of the work force, and told local news reporters that
production will not resume until a new boiler is installed.

I do not know how much cheese is stored or is in the distribution
chain. I also do not know how long it will take to install a new
    boiler.

I did go to the store and buy all the cream cheese I need to make my
    cheesecakes.

Many dairies throughout the country make cream cheese. All is not lost
unless you demand "Philadelphia Cream Cheese."

And the Philly stuff ain't what it used to be -- at least to *my* delicate
taste buds. If any of you all shop at Trader Joe's, the made-in-Wisconsin
house brand is excellent. None of that yucky, gummy, tongue-coating
aftertaste; AND, it blends in like a dream.

With Philly cream cheese selling at $5.00 a pound recently, I'll bet
they get that boiler fixed really quickly. (Wasn't it selling at $.99
an 8oz. package just last Christmas?)

The article said "the plant is shut down until a temporary boiler is
installed within the next few days." As such, I doubt this incident will
cause a prolonged shortage in Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese.

Still is 99¢ on sale at Stop & Shop. Bought a couple of pounds last week.

I saw it tonight at a local supermarket chain for $2.69/8 oz. pkg.

Yep. We are rich in dairy farms here in Missouri and all will not be lost
without Philadelphia brand. I only buy it about 1/2 the time anyway.

I have had it from TJs and liked it. It's creamier than Philadelphia. I
have not cooked with it but it spreads wonderfully on a bagel.

It has gotten expensive. The last time I bought it was for my pumpkin
cheesecake a few weeks back. I don't remember the exact cost but I want to
say it was $1.99 for and 8oz box. I had to buy 4 boxes and I recall being
    surprised by the price.

  13. That's all my local store sells Philadelphia and then their store brand,
    which is just awful.

  14. I guess my big mistake in November is going to pay off. A friend and I made
Pecan Tassies. I thought the crust recipe requiring cream cheese required
more than I thought and I bought a tub of Costco Philadelphia cream cheese.
I've been teasing people who come to my house that they have to bring a
bagel with them and help me use all this cream cheese.

Do try it in cooking/baking, dude; you'll not be disappointed. That
creaminess remains present in the finished product, and again, without any
    chemical aftertaste.

Been meaning to ask if you have ever posted pix of your cyber kitty, Ramsey.
    I'm a sucker for kitties . . .

At BJ's, I get 3# packages of it. Forget the price offhand, but much
cheaper than the supermarket small packages.
