  1. Wetest, coldest, etc etc etc

started off good. rolled out of CBD and along river with a slight tailwind πŸ˜„

get to hawthorn joke-of-a-drome put backpack down and do, i dunno half an hour or so. was on my slicked-up mtb (with guards. twin lights lookin like a bus) and all was good. fer sum reason everybody else was away, dark obviously a scary concept to tri-hardletes who usually zig-zag all over the parts. Finish up and start to feel the first of small rainspots.
Get to Camberwell and Heavens open up. Oh well. put jacket on as lights conveniently turn red.
Get to Anniversay trail north of Canterbury Rd and then feel it. A slow puncture at first, then BLAM! rear tyre totally blown apart!!!

I knew straight away what it was and pulled up under the MontAlbert Rd bridge, lookin like a derro and pull out phone ofr the support crew.
    NOT HOME
Nothing for it but to walk the 5-odd km home in dark, cold, wet + rain.
Rear specialized fatboy 1" slick sidewall had just blown apart (has spotted the first tell-tale fibre worked loose but thought there was much more life in it yet). Soaked to the bone, frozen and just to top it off about 300m short of home get the obligatory truck going thru deep puddle drenching just to make sure. grrrrr.
Bettin Hippy doesnt have to put up with this...

Bath and dinner later and Im feelin vaguely human again.

Now where did i leave that smoking jacket, cognac and copy of NewYorker?

Gad, man. What a simply awful chain of events. Have you written a letter about this to the editor of the said New Yorker magazine? Have you chastised the household staff and drawn their attention to their responsibilities to provide a RELIABLE support crew for the head of the household in his cycling endeavours?

I hope the household staff provided especially excellent bathing and dining to make up for their earlier abrogation of duty. πŸ™‚

Unlucky - tyres always seem to know the most _in_convenient time to blow up. You didn't mention that the reason for the 'slicked up mtb tyre' was because it had done a million km and the knobs had all worn off!

The truck and the puddle must have topped it off - I really shouldn't laugh, but at least your shoulder was undamaged! The really good news is that the next commute should be better...

Ritch (and I thought a stiff headwind was an inconvenience...)

PS. Just a thought, why not ride home with the flat anyway? I've done it on the racer, in granny gear, probably about 8-10km/h for about the same distance.

  4. Ok, so you think you got it hard this morning?

I live in Perth so I dont have to experience Melbourne weather, such as that you're describing, but can somone please explain why it was 3Β° this morning?

There were no wheels to suck to escape the draft, I think It *perhaps* it may have been warmer if I walked rather than rode.

    Whats with that?

    till

  5. I had the joy of blowing my front tyre about 15kms out of town on a training ride (Mt Isa). That was a world of fun especially because i had used my last tube and hadnt got round to replacing it yet. Damn Murphys law. :p

I was out there. I left a 5:30am to get to W.Pth. Had the full cold weather gear on and was still cold (face mainly). Reminded me of my days in ACT, riding to work where I used to wear all my cold weather gear on plus a snow jacket over the top, in minus 3-7 degree.

I do know some of those at work that normally ride in did not today as they have their "below 8 degree rule". Yes I gave them heaps.

  7. huh? wah?
Shortest day of the year, was spent by one of us as god intended.
Stay in to what 10:30am. Breakfast, which then merged into lunch, had outside - made the most of the sun that was out rolling up my Tshirt sleeves & all.
Hacked at the garden some, replaced me gear cables on the Stumpjumper (mushy gear changing, changing gears when it felt like it - thought that wierd) & painted the toilet. As well as general pancing about an empty house in my jocks all afternoon with my 'banned' collection of early 90's no one likes -["..came from the east, like the sun, but with tired engine...really don't like lobster..."].

it's dark, cold & rainy out right now.
Bet it'll be the same 7am tomorrow morning when I set off to take on the world again.......

That sucks. RE: support crew, RACV do bike cover for $15 a year and
comes as part of their more complete packages. Four call a year, just
    like a car.

Next we'll be getting rego ;-)

  10. what time, Dutcho?

there was a break in the rain between about 6:45pm and 8:30 which allowed the Beach Rd "BP" ride to go ahead. The road was dry (enough) from Beaumaris to the city

yep, twas a good day to head out for breakfast at Aroma in Ormond Rd Elwood for Salmon Benny with Baby Spinach, the latte and a smidgin of sun peaking down around 10...then a cool visit to the Melb. Zoo and check out the butterfly cage in 30C temp...(inside) outside 12C...another coffee with the Meercats, and a light munch on a lamington , a tour of the big cats, some red bum baboons, a visit to the heffalumps and their cool thai village enclosure, a whizz past the Rothschilds and off to Elwood for a final short black with a danish.....finally wound up home and grabbed the trackie, headed up Warrigal Road to Canterbury, to Burke Rd in the lousy rain and after an hour of driving meditation arrived at DISC for three hours of punishment with "Monster"....when the heart rate subsided at 10-15pm, managed to scoff a capricciosa (medium) at the Fairfield Pizzaria before a hot lap down Hoddle to Nepean and home to a warm bath...and very soon...ny ny's....sleep in till hmmmmmm, oh 8-30 on Wed.....might do it all again, but I'm NOT racing wed night derbysmarathons...blah! no fun....maybe Thursdays will get a gong tho!
    ....turn off light........... . . . . . . . .

Actually, lately, what I've been thinking I need is a high powered sniper rifle. I work on the 33rd floor in a bit 80's styled building. I could wear black and shoot people from my window.

Maybe tracer πŸ™‚[/QUOTE]courtesy of www.cybersniper.com "WHY donΒ΄t you just buy(Lotte) a rifle designed for sniper stuff, from the ground up ? There some very capable .308 rifles around, like Malcolm CooperΒ΄s Accuracy International AW/AWP series, the swiss made SIG, the fine SAKO TRG , the very rare and extremelly expensive (around $6000) Ultima Ratio and finally my preffered one: the Blaser Tactical."

....mmmmmm I think I'll stick to re-building old steelys with Carbon Athena and C-Record bits-meet a nicer class of people, wot!
spotting Cayenne's and Tuaregs wouldnt be sport...but then, some mightn't think that !

Tracer for a sniper? Are you suicidal?

A sniper's survival depends on not being detected. That rules tracer
    right out.

I dont think stealth is the priority here. Lotte doing stealth? Nah
She only wants the sniper rifle to put the round exactly where she wants it

I think she would want to watch the round go in. SOmehow. Call me
    cynical.
