If I took 2.5mm off of my 177.5 cranks, but left the hole where it was, would they be 175mm?

I could do this with a grinder, no?

All things considered, did not think there was anyone that daft.

You can do it for kids if the crankarms are broad enough. I wouldn't trust them for anyone over 80
lbs though.

Just bought a second hand crankset 180 length i am a bit small so i plan to convert this crank to
165 by cutting it boring hole then tapping it.

You have got to be kidding - if it's a plain vanilla crank set whit no special treatment of the
metal it may be okay but theese days the better cranksets are treated in all matter of ways to save
weight, increase strengt and stiffness.

I know of a guy who's crankset broke and the remainder cut open his leg
- if he had been riding alone that day he would have died from the blood loss in just a
few miniutes!

In my view there is no amount of money one can save to justify riding with equipment one cannot
trust a 110%, vanilla cranksets are not expensive buy a new one - you may even be able to swap in
the old or perhaphs sell it 2nd hand.

The only time I've read about this being done is for people with odd leg lengths who need
asymmetrical lengths. It's quite a risk to your safety to take to save a few bucks otherwise.

This is a bad idea too. Ya just need to buy two cranks a long one and a short one and find someone
with the other leg shorter. :-)

My brother in law did this for his kids bikes. Worked fine. It was sick though. He took XT cranks
and cut them down! He was custom building FS frames/bikes for both of his kids (he's a mech.
engineer, with lots of machine tools to play with). Very cool, but never ridden enough.

Yes I did my $300 FSA carbon cranks this way and it turned out better than store-bought ones. You
should do yours too!
