I haven't ridden the Candies, but my "regular" Eggbeaters were a tad stiff
when new. I found that the cleats wear quickly, however, which helps ease
'em up fairly soon.

Err... not that I own any clipless pedals...but if I did I might own a pair
of these and I'm sure they would have been just fine over the half-dozen
times I haven't ridden them recently including one amusing crash I didn't
have.

Have you got the 15 degree or 20 degree release cleats?

I'm going to switch the cleat over to the 'less aggressive' position
today- i'll update w/ results.
Saturday, I managed to find the only hog wallow in abt 30 sq miles
(entire left side of my body coated) when these [censored] didn't
release...High times for my riding 'pal'. They seem to have a huge
area of lateral give which means you gotta kick your heel out abt 50
degrees, it seems, to get em to kick loose.

_ The eggbeaters in general take some time to wear in
properly. Also, they only release sideways. If you're used
to SPD's at a low seating, it takes a bit of "unlearning"
to switch to eggbeaters. When it gets desperate, I can pull
straight out of SPD's, you can't do this with eggbeaters.

Do they release correctly otherwise? Are your shoes interfering with
the release? I have the Mallets, and when I first put them on my
shoes I thought I would never be able to get out. With a shim under
the cleats they pop out when I want them to.

I just threw my candy Cs on yesterday for their first ride, and they seemed
fine. I think maybe my SPDs were somewhat tight before, but I thought they
worked great. Plus, there is a very satisfying "click" when i get in.
