Today on the commute home, I was heading at a fair speed down a slope on the
fixie, pushing a little to try to stay ahead of the cars as I approached a
roundabout. The computer said 49.9kmh max, which is about 150RPM on my 67
inch gear (46X18 on 700x23). This is the fastest I've been on the fixie -
felt like about my max unless I get shorter cranks.
Halfway down I got a cramp in my left calf. Being fixed, there are not too
many options available. I stopped pushing and kept turning over the pedals.
This was bearable at first, but the pain got worse and worse. Eventually I
unclipped and rolled to a stop one legged. I am so glad I have a front
brake.
I had not drank anything on the ride, but I was not even at the 20KM mark.
So my questions are: what should I do to avoid this in future and what do I
do now that I am home with pain in my calf, but no cramp?
