    A definite statement can't be made about tubing size. If the "solid" honeycomb tubing goes into the production of bikes and everything else remains the same, the honeycomb tube could be smaller in diameter than a similar hollow CF tube while still achieving the same stiffness. There are, unfortunately a lot of other considerations. The most you can say is that tubing sizes on bikes with such tubing could very well be smaller. FWIW, Somec may be the first to use a honeycomb throughout the full inside diameter of the CF tubing wall, but at least one other company, Javelin, has been using CF tubing with a honeycomb structure sandwiched by the exterior tubing wall and interior tubing wall. Javelin has been around and working with CF a long time.

  2. Like I said it's just an opinion. But I've read many posts from all sorts of other forums about CF frame cracking and or breaking. The subject of CF aircraft comes up all the time for reasons to buy CF bikes, but again aircraft CF is of different quality then bike frames. The F22 uses carbon fiber fuselage but Titanium is used in critical high stress areas. In fact 39% of it's construction is TI, while only 24% is CF, the rest is AL. I know that the F117 needed new various CF components replaced after so many hours of flight time, but that was an acceptable cost for the military for obvious reasons. But [FONT= 'Comic Sans MS']Bulkheads are still made from titanium, aluminum or other conventional metals and alloys because of the tremendous thermal and pressure demands. CF used in aircraft is far better and stronger then in bikes.[/FONT]

    We could go on and on about this stuff, but in the end it's just opinions. Like I said I'm not going to embrace AL or a CF bike...maybe I would embrace a CF fork since most new bikes I'm looking at come with them.

    On a different subject, I wonder what impaled on a vibrating, electrically charged mace would be like?

  3. Good comments here on a discussion that could go on forever. Agree a lot of it comes down to our expectations for the bike. Race equipment is designed to be lightweight, not to last forever, but most of us are sold race stuff when we walk into an LBS these days unless we specifically know we want something else. Anyone wanting a "lifetime" frame should probably avoid ultra-light anything, but as Alienator said, how many people really care to ride a bike for 100K miles over decades these days? Sadly, too many marketeers and LBS salesmen will tell us "don't worry, it will hold up fine, and if not, it's got a lifetime warranty".

    Concerning the aviation/bike comparison, suppose everyone's experience is different. My background relates to production aircraft manufacturing, which is probably much different than those exotic one-off mirror frames for space telescopes. On the bike side, my custom frame bike was built by an aerospace guy, using a specific 7005 tubeset, welded by an aerospace certified welder using nitrogen back-purging of the frame along with the proper tig settngs and materials. It was artificially-aged (baked in an oven) to the time/temp specifications from Columbus, to restore the grain structure in the weld zones. The epoxy used to bond the pre-made CF rear section was the correct spec and well within date codes. The controls weren't all documented like a/c production requires, but I think the processing care was similar thoughout the build.

    My guess is that C'dales CAAD processing specs and QA are also rigorous, including full-frame destructive testing on routine samples of production. I have a radonneur friend who's put something like 100K miles on a CAAD frame from the mid-90's. Of course, that's a sample of one, so doesn't really prove much other than at least one guy has ridden an aluminum frame a long time. Also dispells the myth that CAAD frames are "too harsh" for long distance rides, eg, 1200K non-stop brevets.

    Thanks alienator, I wonder if this could happen with bicycles. Sounds interesting and I suppose that it only needs one frame builder to start using them for the others to follow :-)

    Although, people are so obsessed with everything being over sized :-)

    Hi Froze, strange comment ??? It sounds like you would like to let us know but it is probably easier to get hold of a cattle prod which I guess would be similar, although they are probably happy that they are not impaled at the same time. Just ask the cattle what a cattle prod is like :-)

    yeah... i saw this guy on a local stage race with a broken Scott, i couldn't but think there goes a 2000 usd. frameset, the price of his son's semester scholarship, we have enter a time of disposable luxurious items, your laptop, your cell phone, now your bike, etc
