Not cycling related but I'm in pain. Breathing is interesting and sneezing or laughing is not to be contemplated.
All in the name of corporate team building I spent last week doing such pointless stuff as paintballing and karting[1]. While in the woods, I managed to jump in a ditch and hear my chest go "crunch" as I landed on it (arm's no good to use as shock absorber, see).
I put it down to being a bad bruise but it doesn't seem to be going away so I'm bveginning to think I may have cracked a rib. Sound familiar to anyone and, if so, how long does it take to mend?
[1] After putting the kart into the tyres and getting a bollocking for driving 1 handed, I bailed out of that one.

Sounds just like a cracked rib. I received a couple when assulted by a yob in September and it took about eight weeks to heal. Riding was OK but any twisting, coughing, deep breaths or knocks were very painful. I'd get it checked out. I was prescribed some anti-inflamatories and some painkillers.
I'm going through exactly the same thing at the moment, mine was a fracture. I can ride, I can kind of run, but I cannot deep breath or lay on my stomach in bed. I was told to just rest it which I find difficult!
Like to say I done it in some heroic way, unfortunately I done it in the office because I was late for a meeting! I missed the lift doors on the 7th and decided to run down the stairs to the 1st floor. On the 2nd I slipped slightly and bashed my right rib-cage on the handrail. Jeez, I was in agony for a few minutes.

I've had them (three), yes it feels exactly like that, about a month, nothing much the medics can do (but they may strap you up a bit).

Assuming no ribs are displaced then there is bugger all the medics can do for you.
The cure (term used loosely) is to wait about 6 to 8 weeks. It will continue to hurt like hell for the first part but then get better.
Don't get a cold or flu -- and don't laugh. A good coughing spell will be agony :~)
When I did it I was back on my (road) bike within days but had to get a mate to fix a puncture for me about 3 weeks in -- I simply couldn't weald the levers or pump.

The bad news is my daughter has just caught the latest fashion in vomiting virus and since last night has been chucking up at 30 minute intervals. We are currently sitting at opposite ends of the house as I have no intention of catching it.

You'll probably get it in any case. I saw my mate for 5 minutes when he came into the office to say he was ill and the next day I had it too. It's not a lot of fun.

Not necessarily - the family got it but I escaped - touch wood. The only good news is it seems to be over in 24hrs.

Mine wasn't displaced until about a fortnight after the original injury, when I stretched out in bed and felt a crack. After that there was a step in the rib at the site of the injury and it hurt more. This was at the start of an activity weekend doing coastal sports, so I took some painkillers and did the activities. Bobbing about with a bouyancy aid on was painful, and paddling a canoe made it crunch. A fortnight after that it was fine except for a lump at the site of the break, which shrunk gradually and is barely detectable after four months.
So my advice is take lots of painkillers and do it anyway.
