I once had a wheel go on me, it split and collapsed completely with no warning. Wasn't particularly
pleasant. I wouldn't fancy it happening when you're going quickly or on rough ground.

It is not too easy, we are just about to go to the US, to ride, this wheel has a 32h rim, and I
would have to have it rebuilt with a new rim in just a couple of days, I just might be able to get
that done.

An alternative would be to use another wheel, got a 28h bontrager wheel with a beautiful CK hub.
However, that rim i pretty worn too, though not cracked, and may have to be replaced.

Are Bontrager Race Lite MTB ceramic rims widely available and can I depend on finding a good wheel
builder somewhere in Colorado?

Don´t fancy having to hang around Denver for that.

The problem with that wheel is that a 28h ceramic rim can be difficult to find.

I would think that one of the Denver shops, that rented bikes, would loan you a wheel for a small
fee while they built a new wheel for you. You could pick it up on the way home or:

Off the bike, it will last forever.

On the bike, it will alast until there is a big enough hit to break it. Predicting when that hit
will come is the hard part. And the break threshold gets lower every ride, as the cracks get longer.

I rode with a cracked 517 for about 200 miles; eventually the wheel developed a flat spot there, the
spokes got really loose, and the crack got bigger. I even raced on it, at a really nasty course at
Plattekill Mt, NY. However, I never said I was smart. Front wheel, I'd definitely replace
IMMEDIATELY! The rear wheel you could get away with for a little while, but its definitely a
replacement job.

Thanks, for realistic assessment. It is a rear wheel. The interesting question for me is wheather to
have i rebuilt in Sweden or in the US. Sometimes bike parts are a lot cheaper in the US than in
Sweden. Now, I checked Colorado cyclist, whose retail store is far out of our way, and found that
their prices for Mavic 517 are not better than in Sweden, so I will try to have a rebuild this week
in Stockholm. May have to go down on my knees and beg.

Thanks, good idea, only thing is we like to head for the mountains immediately, so I will try to
rebuild the wheel before we go. Surely Denver is a nice city but we much rather spend our time in
Crested Butte or Durango.

You might want to think about getting a different rim. I've seen a lot of cracked 517's (on my own
bikes and those of others) and frankly I really don't think they're up to the job. Some around here
evangelise about the double eyeletted 618 rim, which is what I'll be getting next, to see.

D521's? Served me well, and although light, I'm a rough (errmmm - 'clumsy'😉 rider. I run my tyres at
stupid low pressures, bang the wheels about, and never had even the slightest ding.

I found a 618 in Stockholm, at a better shop, and they rebuild the wheel til tomorrow. So the
problem is solved.

There is a reason I bag on the 517 and endorse the 618. Don't ride that 517 anymore because it will
fail and you never know when.
