    Planckaert and Peers say goodbye
    No comment from Museeuw

"There wouldn't be much point in taking it to the CAS," said Jo Planckaert to
Belgian VRT television. "During the case I wouldn't be allowed to ride and that
could go on for months. I have ridden my last race on Thursday in Zwevezele.

"I still ask myself how a court can sentence someone without proof. With
Landuyt and Versele I have only spoken about vitamins and supplements. Never
about doping." Planckaert then alluded to Filip Meirhaeghe's comparatively
light suspension of 15 months, saying, "Someone who took EPO gets 15 months and
can race again in 2006. Goddamn, I should have taken everything. And won the
Ronde van Vlaanderen and Milan-San Remo. I'm an ignoramus again."

What amazes me is how people who rail against the Patriot Act and the rest of
that [censored] are more than willing to convict, sentence, and destroy riders
careers on suspicion, circumstantial evidence, and grandstanding.
It's all part of Justice, and that's with a capital J. You don't hang people
out with an incredibly limited ability to defend themselves as Andy has pointed
    out so well.
    Bill C

  2. More likely that they got them with good circumstantial evidence (like their
tapped phone conversations) and other evidentiary materials. I would be
nice if they made it all public. Far more than suspicion. Wiretaps can be
    great nails in coffins.

  3. I forgot to add, they never tested positive for what they were suspended
    for.

All [censored]. Riders who never tested positive should never be suspended.
You and all the vulture press can write all the wise after the event

For the European masses Johan will ever remain the best Classics riders of

And criminals should never be found guilty and sent to prison unless they
are caught in the act by the police with video recording present? There are
lots of guys sitting in prison with cases made on phone taps. Time to come
into the real world of evidence and proof.

I don't recall the Belgian Federations passing judgment on Museeuw's status
as a Classics rider. If you assume that they're all doping, as most Euro
fans do, then he's no better or worse than all the others and you can
worship him if it pleases you.

I think it is safe to say that it depends on the quality of the evidence.
From what has been ciculating about those phone taps, either the quality
sucks in this case or the really compelling portions were not made public.

But drugs in sport is not the real world. Many of the drugs that are banned
are not even illegal for the rest of the population. This is getting out of
hand when Sudafed is treated the same as crack cocaine or any other schedule
I drug (that is the real FDA and the real controlled drugs in the *real*
world). The UCI, WADA, some heavy handed race promoters, the cycling press
and many of the fans treat them precisely the same though. In fact, so is
Methadone if you want another glaring example if just how ridiculous this
has all become. Methadone is primarily used for one of 2 serious medical
issues and neither issue is related to performance in any way. Unless of
course we don't want athletes with illnesses to be treated. Oh, that is what
you want? OK, I give up.

What is clear is that the whole sport is being torn apart by the Drug Nazis.
I'll walk away before I join them. I have noticed that most of the people
that are really all choked up about "DOPING!!!" really have no idea how much
hard work goes in to getting fit enough to race, regardless of what drugs
are available. You hear hyperbole like "riding like a motorcycle" from
critter [censored] (who inconsistently also points out that you can't make a
donkey in to a race horse no matter what doping protocols are used) and
others who claim that the racing is "phony" or whatever phraseology comes
out at the moment. It is all a bunch of horse [censored]. Nobody ever quotes the
people that have used these drugs when they testify that there is very
little benefit. The biggest concern was in the days prior to the "50% rule"
but that is being taken care of beautifully. I don't think cycling will ever
come out of this nose dive, for all the reasons that make this sport great.
There are too many pussies that can't stand getting beaten to the ground by
those that work so much harder than they do. Those idiots intentionally or
out of naiveté jump on the bandwagon and tear down the sport where it is
most vulnerable. When winning the damn race is seen as circumstantial
evidence of doping, how can the sport possibly restore any of its
credibility? The few reasonable people correctly point out that cheating and
drug use (not always related, but to the detractors it is the same issue)
will always be something to monitor and manage whenever humans are involved.
Get over it, move on and stop the chicken little [censored] about the sky falling
on your head. It is getting like Nascar in that half the fans are watching
to see who crashes next. How else can you explain something like critter
    probe?

  8. Cut them some slack. They were just rehearsing for a new stageplay on
doping in the peloton. DeClerq wrote the script.
