I'm not watching the race thanks to f&*$# OLN so all I have to go by is the audio feed....but could this be another "act" from Lance? He seems to pull something else out of his hat every year to give people a false sense of confidence...and remember, there is still a LOT of racing left...the Tour isn't even 1/3 over...

I can't see it either, but Phil and Paul keep saying that Lance doesn't look stressed, so perhaps USPS's only goal today was to drop Ullrich and watch Beloki?
Or Lance's detractor's are getting what they want--Lance will have to fight for his life this year.
I don't think he can afford such an act. Yesterday ok, he gave the French their party, but this is different. Mayo now 1,10 behind Lance. (Beloki 40 secs).

OLN airs stuff live when they have the rights, and at least provides live audio, while CBS will stick us with a tape-delayed highlight show. I'll blame CBS.
Lance has been surrounded by teammates and he's hardly broken a sweat to get into the yellow jersey. So Mayo had a good stage today. I didn't hear anything to suggest Lance was ever worried about him. And the rap on Mayo is staying power. As has been said, we're barely 1/3 of the way. Shoot, Hincapie led the peloton up whatever the other big climb today was before Alpe de Huez. Lance has lots of folks to help him -- way more than the other teams do. And as for all the other climbers coordinating an attack? Lets see Simoni put that together now!

Mayo has some as well... I'm not claiming that Armstrong won't win this Tour, but the question was if this was an act today and I'm sure it wasn't, that's all.
He's got his teammates around him this year. Its not like last time he was on l'Alpe D'Huez, when Ulrich's team had him isolated. No reason to burn himself out picking up a few minutes when he can already claim the MJ and be more well-rested than his rivals. Let them risk losing their legs in the second half of the tour.
I do miss the years when USPS was a relatively weak team 🙁

It's CBS's fault - they've screwed up every Tour they've ever tried to cover and they insisted as part of their contract with Le Society that OLN not show live coverage so the CBS could show taped, edited coverage. They've had the rights to weekend broadcasts for years before OLN even existed.
I don't know if it's an "act" but I didn't see any reason for Lance to do anything different today. Beloki was obviously having a good day and tried to attack, Lance covered it easiliy and everybody else who was a threat while other riders who might have challeneged fell off the back. So now Lance has a much better idea of whom he has to attack and he can figure out the best time to do it. Why would he attack Beloki and risk having six other guys come with him? Save the attacks for when you can really demolish everybody. Fifty guys together at the base of the mountain is too dicey to uncork the big one.
Certainly some day he'll lose the magic, but it didn't happen today.
Blame CBS. They had paid programming on at 9am! If they were so concerned about losing hardcore cycling viewers for their dopey highlights show, why didn't they just run the live coverage themselves (and have OLN produce it -- they were going to anyway for the re-air)?
I too tuned in to the OLN internet audio feed. I must say, it was at times very difficult to tell what was going on by listening to Phil and Paul (who, of course, we love) on audio only. Usually, you can look at the screen and tell when they are messing up time splits or misidentifying riders. But I suppose today was a crazy day by recent Tour standards.--Shayana Kadidal

Armstrong wasn't able to shake everyone off today unlike in 1999/2000/2001 and 2002, that's a fact. I can't think of a good reason for him not to have done it today if he'd had the legs.

In the post stage interview on French TV he said (in French!) that Mayo wasn't a threat (thinking of the ITT) but then thought aloud..."well if he takes 3 minutes on each mountain stage, then hum...:

Armstrong did exactly what he needed to do today. He marked Beloki and put time into Ullrich. He has no need for heroics at this point. Mayo is NOT a threat win this year, regardless of any irrational hope by the Euro tifosi.
I think we will see a conservative effort in the mountains this year by LA. He'll take no unnecessary risks and will do just enough to win #5 and secure his place in cycling history.

In 2003 and 2001, Lance showed some weakness by the third week of the tour, and Bruyneal claimed he'd come into form too early, and peaked too soon. It looks to me like he hasn't peaked yet, and is riding into form, and will peak in the Pyrenees. Just a thought.
