  1. Yea, gruesome topic, but it happened to me yesterday. it wasn't a whole lot, but 3/4 of my ride yesterday I was spitting up blood.

    Anyone know the deal?!!!!!!!
    Kind of nervous...

  2. Was your effort particularly hard? i.e. close to full out?

I have had the taste of blood (metalic) before but never coughed up any in the past. Also, I know someone else who has had the taste.

My guess (assuming it is a hard ride) is that you've put your airways under huge stress and slightly ruptured it.

As with all such post, we all hate to hear it, but we all say it - go see a doctor.

    🙂

  3. No, but that would be alarming, definitely something to have checked out. But could you tell if it was coming from nose, throat, stomach or (yikes?) chest? Did you have an upset stomach?

It's probably just irritated air passages, but go see a doctor (advice I give but rarely take), especially if it happens again...

  4. Definitely see a doctor.....but I have heard of this before when a cyclist had done a particularly long hard effort during a race.

Trek dude, see a doc, it pays to be cautious whatever the cause. It could just be a sinus infection but better to check it out so we won't miss your posts around here buddy....

"Breathing and coughing problems: on the increase in our polluted world. Could be asthma or hay fever or just a sign you’re unfit. Asthma often occurs at night or when you wake up and may be triggered by an allergy to dust, cats or a food, for example. Pack up smoking and get some exercise. See your GP immediately if you cough up blood."

  6. I didn't have problem breathing, and it wasn't 'hardcore' coughing, kind of like 'clearing' my throat cough cause stuff was in there. And it did eventually stop. But yea, I'll keep a close eye on it.

But I was working hard yesterday to answer that question. Hell yeah!

    Thanks everyone

  7. Did you by chance have a nosebleed during the night? This happens to me occasionally and I end up coughing up blood the next day. I have really bad allergies and get nosebleeds fairly often. Is this a possibility?

Like everyone else said, get to your doc ASAP. Better safe than sorry.

    Hey TrekDedicated,

I guess after all the posts you're getting a pretty consistent picture about seeing a doctor.

You're saying that there wasn't a lot of blood yet at the same time it was enough to notice while riding? ....interesting....

Just to strike the fear of God into you, spitting up blood can be a very, very big deal. However it can also come from brushing your teeth too hard if your gums are bleeding, or, as mentioned earlier, if you had a nosebleed in the past hours. Hopefully you have a bit of a feel for if it could be something like these things.

Spitting up blood (pink and streaking red) is a system in a life threatening and life altering heart problem. Coughing up blood that is a thicker is a sign of lung cancer.

Thorough bread race horses have been known to spit blood (frothy pink spit) after extremely strong efforts, however this is almost unheard of in humans. And although I'm sure you were working hard, I doubt this explains anything to do with you.

The title of your thread is one of the most alarming health related thread titles I've ever read.

    Take care.

yea, my spit was pink (blood and saliva mixed together, so not a plethora of blood, but it was noticeable.

Everyone thanks for the replies. I'm sure it's nothing, but I'll be seeing my doc.

    THANKS!

  10. I've read some frightening stuff on the net that I'm not gunna alarm you with, so SEE YOUR DOCTOR. I'm worried about you.

dude, how did this turn out? I see you've been posting, so I assume you're still alive:p

I just read somewhere about burst blood vessels in the lungs during extreme efforts which can cause this

WHoa, was very surprised to this be bumped! Thanks for thinking about me though!

Well, it had gone away then it came back a few weeks ago, and when I went to the doctor, he bascially said that my throat/tracheya (spelling), has been inflammed for quite sometime and that my coughing spells (ongoing thing, BUT NO LONGER!!), caused all the tissue to become irritated, also, a bacterial/viral thing was in my chest, so I've been loaded up on antibiotics and Lord knows what. My body has been getting it's butt whooped on. (I blame the crappy college dorms and all the 'disease' that lurks in 'em).

Needlees to say, I'm better now.

    Thanks!

  13. Phew!! 🙂

I read on the "hour record" thread in the track cycling section that, after a race, Graeme Obree coughed up blood for three days due to blood vessels bursting in his lungs (but don't quote me::p), and apparently it's quite common for race horses to do it.
