This morning I was commuting to work and reached a 4 way stop. I'm going to go straight and no other cars are at the intersection although a cop car is coming down the street on the right. I leave the intersection, the cop is still aproaching, gets to the intersection, stops very briefly and then makes a right turn -- while I'm already going through the intersection (a little more than half way through at this point). No sirens or anything at any time on the cop car. I have to veer left to avoid his car and come within an inch or two of his door (with me somewhat shakily at this point). He continues on.
I go down the street to the police station and report the incident. But the cop who comes out never asked me my name nor did I sign any complaint form or anything. He did ask if I saw the number on the cop car and I gave him the liscense number and told him the incident just happened down the street.
Question: Do you think the cop I talked to will reprimand the other cop or was this just show because I complained? (I don't know if the second cop was his supervisor or anything).

It is doubtful there will ever be anything on paper. I imaginge:
"Some Bozo on a bike complained that you nearly hit im over at ABC and XYZ." "I never saw a bike over there." "That's what I figured. He had your number, though." "I'll be more careful."
"AustinMN" wrote: (clip)"Some Bozo on a bike complained that you nearly hit im over at ABC and XYZ." (clip) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Another scenario, just as likely, is: "Some Bozo on a bike complained that you nearly hit him ofer at ABC and XYZ."
"Well, I didn't see anyone on a bike. Those guys ought to be more careful. Don't they know how much a car weighs?"

This is an answerable question. Go back to the station and ask the guy you complained to what happened. Have a pad and pen in your hand.
I got brushed by a cop once in a tight squeeze -- nobody's fault -- but he stopped and made sure I was okay. Municipalities have to take liability very seriously.

If you cross post this message we won't have to see it in each newsgroup that it appears, it already having been seen in the first event. There is benefit for all if you do that.

I'm not sure what you mean. I did not cross post it, which you state, but then you say "we won't have to see it in each newsgroup that it appears" implying that I did cross post. Not sure what point you're trying to make.

I came across this item in both rec.bicycles.tech rec.bicycles.misc and it appeared as a new message because it was not cross posted... but this message is and will be flagged as "new" only once and then it appeas as "read" in the other newsgroup.

You'll see it only once if you have your reader set to "Hide read or iqnored messages" (OE lingo). The first event will happen in the ng you first viewed the post in, so if you switch to another group the original message will be hidden (if cross-posted).

It's sort of he said ... she said. I doubt if the police would do much, regardless of who's license number you turned in.
I will say that when I was hit by a Chicago cop in 2002 (in uniform, but off-duty) the accident was handled professionally by the officers who answered the call. The only oddity was that they asked me several times what my birthday was. I thought this was because they wanted to be sure I was alert and attentive to my surroundings and appreciated their solicitude. However, it was probably because I was born 2/22/50 and was 52 years old -- the man whose SUV hit me was born 2/22/52 and was 50 years old. They probably figured one of those numbers was wrong.
More clearly. Cross-posted messages all have the same Message-ID. Newsreaders can be configured to ignore messages with IDs that have already been viewed elsewhere.

I read both newsgroups and then some, and find encountering the same message repeatedly unnecessary clutter. Better newsreaders advance to the next unread item in a thread instead of showing things that have already been read. Your newsreader may not have that capability but, as I said, the better ones do. There are several thousand postings in -tech and -misc groups. I don't care to review those that I have previously read or flagged as having been read.

Thunderbird does have this ability; somewhere in the preferences is an option to "filter read messages" Then only unread messages appear when you open the newsgroup. Pan also has this ability. Pan also seems to be able to filter out messages even if they have been read in another group! So cross-posted messages appear only once. Don't know about others.

I posted it to rec.bicycles.misc. I did not post it to rec.bicycles.tech, although I see it there. I checked the headers on my original message and it only lists rec.bicycles.misc. I do not know how it got to .tech. If my newsreader messed up (slrn on windows - which is not the best version of slrn) why only those two groups? Is it possible for someone else to have forwarded it to the other newsgroup (which I didn't think you'e supposed to be able to do)?

I use OE express. I see your original post only on rbm. I see it appeared on rbt only when Jobst replied the first time to you. It became cross-posted at that point, or at least it appears that way in OE with my settings. Don't ask me.
Pan also has this ability. Pan also seems to be able to filter out messages even if they have been read in another group!
Fully deserving of an exclamation mark, given that this is something all halfway decent newsreaders have done forever.
Seriously. I'm not saying they aren't out there, but I've never heard of a newsreader that doesn't handle crosspostings correctly. -- David Damerell <[email hidden]> Kill the tomato! Today is Second Mania, January.

I never saw the original message. I read r.b.tech, I don't read r.b.misc.
Jobst is saying that crossposting is better than multiposting. I agree with that. If you look up those terms, I think you'll understand what he is saying. But since I didn't see the original post, I don't think you multiposted.
