  1. Anybody ever read "Home Cooking: A Writer In The Kitchen" by
Laurie Colwin? Such a nice read. Laurie Colwin was an author
who wrote some essays (about her experiences in the kitchen)
which were compiled to make this book, plus another one
    titled "More Home Cooking".

Written in a charming and conversational tone, the book is
interspersed with a few of the author's favorite recipes
here and there along with the essays.

Colwin? Oh yes, one of my favorites. Have you tried the
    creamed spinach with jalapenos (p 84) ? It's a knockout!

  3. As a matter of fact, YES! I made it earlier today and it was awesome! I
actually was eating it when I sent in the post regarding the book - no lie!
    Weird, huh?

Hey that is kinda weird. But as she says even people who
don't like spinach always fall for that dish!

I took both on my trip to the Republic of Georgia two years
    ago. Good reads.

Yes! I have both Home Cooking and More Home Cooking, and I
love her style. Not to mention her recipes. Some of my
favorites are the shortbread recipe, and the damp
gingerbread recipe, both of which are excellent. I've also
followed her suggestions on various ways to roast chicken.
It was from Laurie Colwin that I first summoned the
courage to bake my own bread. (Alas I've stopped baking
bread as I realize it's an excuse for me to eat much too
    much butter and jam.)

I find the chapter "Repulsive Dinners: A Memoir" chapter in
the first book hilarious. How many cooks/cookbooks have a
chapter dedicated to all the bizarre and inedible meals
they've been subjected to, and the hosts who were guilty of
cooking them? And the way she describes them just knocks me
over every time. The books are also a nice size to hold, and
they have wonderful little black and white line drawings on
    various pages.

Alas, Laurie Colwin died in 1992, and it is a sad loss.
