cooktop vent fans

range. current lighting is a hanging light over the table
behind me when facing the range, a hanging light about 8' to
the left & a floresent light over the sink 4' to the right...
the room is mostly very dark stained (by cooking & the
previous owners cigarette smoke) pine wood, with one bay
window on the north & a double window over the sink on the
south. i'm planning to paint the walls & cupboards in pale
greens (aracuna egg colors) & put metal ceiling tiles on the
ceiling & behind the rance (possibly copper colored. if not,
silver). the floor is gold ceramic tile, very scratched &
improperly installed over the original pine floors (lots of
hairline cracks). unless i win a lottery, the floors also stay
:p i have rugs in front of the doors, the sink & the range.
any suggestions? i *really* want a range hood.

Is the range on an outside wall? If yes, you should consider a through the
wall fan. The hood types of fans are essentially useless.

unfortunately, no.
i know the hood fans are less than ideal, but they *are*
better than nothing. or at least i suspect they are... if you
keep them clean.
there *was* a huge grease spot on the ceiling of the summer
place over the vent on the hood, but i figured it was because
the previous owner's wife never ever bothered to clean
anything (i'm less than stellar at housekeeping, but that
place made me look like the Queen of Clean!). i was surprised
to find the stove & hood were actually white...

In that case, I'm not sure exactly what your question is. You said "i not

So? Go buy one. Maybe check www.consumerreports.org first to see if they've
tested various models. And, don't assume that Sears & Home Depot have the
best selection or price. Check around at some appliance specialty stores.

Maybe it wasn't the former owner's wife's job to clean?

Boston. 1.5 hours
smaller cities would be Concord NH (Sears, Home Depot & Lowes)
or Manchester NH (Sears, Home Depot). i avoid Manchester as
much as possible. those are each 45 minutes away.
there used to be an appliance store in Manchester, but it
burned down years ago.
i suspect i'd have better luck waiting until i get a chance
to go to the hardware store in Wolcott NY. at least they knew
what i was talking about...

You are crazy. You'd drive all the way to Wolcott, instead of doing a simple
google search? I love hardware stores, but they are absolutely the wrong
place to be looking for a product like the one you want. And, if you won't
drive an hour and a half for an item like that, you don't want it very
badly.
