Yesterday my daughter (she's 8) and I made a poke cake....where you bake the
cake, poke holes and pour jello on top. She loves baking and wouldn't let
me get started pulling out the supplies until she had her chef hat and apron
on. When we got her all set, she asked where the box mix was - surprised
her to learn that we could make cakes from scratch. LOL! guess I made a few
too many cakes out of the box LOL.

split Hot Dogs on the griddle. He also helped cook the corn and green chili
mixture on the griddle as well.

Yesterday he looked me straight in the eye and said "Papa (that's me) you're
a great cook"

I get help from my litttle bug too. He loves to stand in the kitchen
and "stir" his pot while I cook. He hates it when I am cooking and he
can't see what I am doing, so I will often hold him and let him look
into the pan. His favorite toy is an orange - he will carry it around
for hours, sniffing it, scratching it, and loving on it. Just too cute
for words. He turned 18 mos this week.

My almost-4-year old insisted on helping me snap green beans this
morning, and the 5 year old joined in. "We do this at grandma's house"
they informed me. They knew all about what to do.

They often help me stir things and bake; also I let them cut up veggies
with dinner knives - it's crude and the result is clumsy but it's good
fine motor practice. Plus you want to encourage them to help cook -
*and* clean up!

I like Molly Katzen's Pretend Soup, a cookbook for pre-schoolers.

My ex-SIL (then, age 20) decided that she and my daughter, Stephanie (then,
age 4) should make cookies. She had Stephanie planted in a high chair
without tray next to her at the kitchen counter so Steph could see. SIL
glanced at the recipe and said, "Now, we add the eggs, Stephie." So,
Stephanie did. Yep, shells and all! I love that one. Connie does, too.
Yes, we still see each other. She was a good SIL.
