I boil them and sprinkle them with coarse sea salt. We eat them as a
movie snack.

What are they? Animal, mineral or vegetable?

Boil in salted water. Shell by hand at the table.

something alcoholic - it's like our salted peanuts.

Practice safe eating. Always use condiments.

They're vegetable--soybeans.
I buy the bags of frozen shelled ones, boil 'em for a few minutes, drain,
and salt.

I boil them in very salty water then drain them , toss with a little salt and
serve. We just suck the beans out of the pod.

I buy the frozen kind from time to time and follow the directions for
microwaving on the pack. What I make is never as good as what's
available in a decent sushi place. But no such beast dwells in Cow
Hill.
I've enjoyed edamame in salads with ginger/sesame oil dressings as
well as salted, peeled and munched with a beer.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I just boiled them in salted
water. First time I've had them; I always considered them yuppie
food. I still do, but at least I know what to expect. They taste
kinda like lima beans, but have a much better texture and taste a
little richer. Pretty good overall. Ranks up there int he top 3
beans on my list.
Next time I'll salt the water a little more heavily (you were
right Bubbo - very salty water).
Why are they so expensive, though? The U.S. is the largest
producer of soybeans, and we turn it into TVP, HSP, and all sorts
of other cheap [censored] that costs next to nothing, but the raw
product costs $3/12oz bag? That's why I considered it Yuppie
Food. Why aren't they more common, even canned or frozen?
I'll buy them again, but not at $4/lb. I'll look for canned and
frozen/hulled versions in the meantime - hopefully cheaper.

Steam for about 5 minutes or so, sprinkle with kosher
salt. If you like, sprinkle on a little sesame oil.

I suppose you think Sushi isn't yuppie food, too.
Quoted message said:Try doing some research before making prejudice comments ya [censored].
Looks like I offended a Yuppie wanna-be. Keep practicing - you'll
get the hang of it eventually.

I think sushi is essentially, at this point in history, Japanese fast food,
but that's just my opinion. Well, mine and, I believe, that of most
folks in Japan. The overwhelming majority of sushi places in
Japan are along the lines of "cheap eats" rather than "gourmet
dining/sushi as an art form."
Doesn't mean that sushi isn't at this moment "trendy," within
the limited context of North American culture, but I don't
even know if that would equate to "yuppie food."

College educated, well-paid when I choose to work anymore, but not
in the right age group, thank gawd.
OTOH, These lame insults speak for your background - keep 'em
coming, Hotshot.
ObFood: Dinner was a 1/3lb hamburger, with grilled homemade
Canadian bacon (didn't have any regular bacon), grilled onions +
jalapeno's, dry aged Monterey jack, lettuce and mayo. And Tater
Tots <snicker>. Sometimes simple, white-trash food really hits
the spot.
