Keep in mind I personally have ridden exactly three kinds of tires:
Continental verts, Panaracer Dart/Smoke combo (current setup, but will be
changing it back to Contis) and whatever came with my '89 Rockhopper.

IME it depends on riding conditions - e.g. the Panaracers kick ass
climbing the hard-pack hills, but the Contis are better at surfing through
the deep ashy dust we get here in late summer (No. Central OR). The
Contis seem to shed mud better than other tires (I got rid of the Colorado
mud the fastest out of my group on the WRT a couple of years ago.)

far after 100 or so miles I've been very pleased with it & found it very
grippy for both mud and loose gritty stuff. When the mud dries out I'll
find out what they're like on the hard stuff.

IIRC I paid around 11UKP for it and I vastly prefer it to the
Tioga tyre it replaced. Though it's not covered a lot of miles yet so
far so good.

tires, but nothing recently.

The oldest one, circa 1995, is still on my front wheel and going strong.
It hasn't lost much tread, and I have no idea why since I have well over
2,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, that model is no longer in production -
its still the best front tire I've ever tried.

The late-90's ones had brown sidewalls that tended to crack and fade, but
the worst part about them was the outrageous difficulty required to get
them on & off a rim. I don't know if this has been resolved. It seems like
the sidewalls ripped fairly easily as well - that's what put one of mine
in the trash can.

The only Contis I have are Town & Countries on my old "going down the shops"
bike and they are a bugger to get on and off the rims. I gave up using and
breaking plastic tyre levers and had to get out my old metal set.

Apart from that, they are fine.

Vertical Pro 2.3 is good in everything but hardpack because the small
knobs make it a little squirrely. I'm currently running the Gravity
2.3s on one bike and they are good in everything so far. Unlike the
Vertical Pro, the Gravity is an outstanding hardpack tire.

I just noticed this thread after posting a new one about the Vertical Pro.

I run that same combo and I don't like them. They were OK in the dry and
dusty conditions but once it rained they got scary. No traction on wet rocks
and roots, which comprises a majority of the trail surface here in Western
WA state. I was slipping and sliding all over the place yesterday. They are
coming off my bike immediately. IMO, the compound of the rubber is too hard.

So it wasn't just me having those problems. Still, great tires for
commuting, and not to bad on some single track either.

I need a new rear tire and a LBS is having a going-out-of-business sale.
They have some Conti's for cheap, but I haven't yet looked to see which
models they have left....

Avoid the Explorer Pros like the plague! Noodle-y, squishy, squirmy...you

Oh yeah - I forgot about that. I thought I was just being wimpy, but then
the Panaracers were so much easier to put on. I noticed this with both my
Conti Verts & the Mr's Town & Countries.
