I´m not saying that too much running on natural surfaces can damage
your memory cells, but if you were there at the Coliseum, how can you
have forgotten Alberto Cova´s final kick?:-)
The runner whose "test result was positive" was Martti Vainio, the tall
Finn with whom Cova formed a funnylooking pair for most of the race.

endurance.
For that purpose Vainio could´ve resorted to blood doping (not that
there´s any way of knowing or proving that he - or any other Finn of
the 70´s and 80´s - didn´t). That explanation strikes me as more or
less taken out of thin air by a baffled commentator.
At the time it was believed (in some circles) that a low testosterone
level was a certain sign of overtraining or that the danger of
overtraining could be averted by rising such a low level by taking
testosterone. By all accounts, this is exactly what Vainio did - but it
turned out that the ampoules he´d purchased (over the counter) in
Palermo contained the steroid which later showed up in his sample.
(Testosterone alone would´ve been a banned substance, but the point of
this little story is not that he wasn´t guilty...)
